    Re: 50 + to lose

Hi Cathy! Day 1 for me today! What I understand is that people who weigh more need more calories to lose weight so that the body does not go into starvation mode. Eating too little can shut the body down from losing. I have heard this goes back to caveman days when food could be scarce at times so the body holds the fat it needs to keep the body from dying. You will notice that as you go down into different weight catagories you will consume less calories. Hope this makes sense. Good luck!

Hi Cathy! Day 1 for me today! From what I have learned is that the more you weigh the more calories you need to lose weight or the body goes into starvation mode, holds the fat and you don't lose weight. I believe it goes back to "caveman" days when people were foragers and hunters and food could be scarce at times, so the body learned to hold the fat to exist. You will notice that as you go down into lower weight catagories you will consume less calories to lose. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Cathy, I am 43 with 70 lbs to lose, and mine says the same thing. Yet, I will follow my physician's instructions by adhering to a 1,000/cal per day diet while limiting my fat intake for each meal to <=15g. As I lose weight and get closer to my goal while building up my exercise capacity, I will gradually increase my calorie intake up to between 1400-1500 daily.

I am using Fitday.com to log EVERYTHING I consume EVERYDAY, and watching my nutritional report values very closely to ensure that I am meeting all daily requirements.

    Re: 50 + to lose

I want to lose 60lbs and have been given the 1800/19 figures also. I think if we sat down and honestly calculated what we eat now we'd be way over that. And as the other reply states, it does go back to caveman days. I really don't want my body going into shutdown/starvation mode so I'll be having the 1800 calories and get more active! Good luck to us all.

I know. I just got the Alli and I don't start until Monday. I have just started my diet today. I also got the 1800/19 plan. I need to lose 53 pounds. I really want to so I can feel better and look better. I hate to get out of breath just walking to my backyard. I am ready for something new!!!

    Re: 50 + to lose

I have 80lbs to lose and I am also 1800 calories.  I try to eat more fruits and veggies so that way I will fill full longer.  So far after taking 2 doses I haven't had any side effects.  I can't wait to see next week to see what the scale says.

    Re: 50 + to lose

I STRONGLY advise going below 1200 calories for several reasons, and I can't believe that a doctor would suggest doing so.  The system told me to take in 1600/day, and I had been aiming for 1500 at the advice of my nutritionist.   Remember that the pill is supposed to make about 75% of the calories from fat pass through, so even if you consume 1800/day, you should not absorb that many.  If you consider 16 grams of fat per meal - 25% would be 4 grams -or 36 calories that would not be absorbed.  Multiply that by three meals and you get a little over 100 calories that are in essence "free."  By that logic, the system telling me 1600 and my nutritionist having me at 1500 makes perfect sense.

    Just a thought.

    Re: 50 + to lose

I'd love to lose 68 lbs, that is my goal, Alli website urged me to set my goal for less, like only 10 pounds, but I am through being overweight, I am ready to return to my weight of 5 years ago before I had my last baby.  I have been battling it since then, and here I am today.  I know that there are lots of stories out there, some with more or less to lose, some fighting with their weight their whole lives, and some since childbirth, whatever the circumstances we all have the desire to lose the weight in common, but do we have the committment?  I guess we will see...

    ready set go

    Re: 50 + to lose

I am starting tomorrow ( or today actually, since it is 3AM right now). I am 25, 5'4, and I actually need to loose 130LBS, so this will be a VERY long term thing for me. I get so discouraged because my husband and I will eat and exercise the same, and yet he looses weight 50% faster then me, and it's discouraging. I'm hoping with the alli that I will loose weight as fast as he does, and maybe I will be the one discouraging HIM!!!

    Re: 50 + to lose

    Hi,

I was wanting to know Alli gave me the 1800/19 fat also because I have a lot to lose also. Is this the correct dosage or go down to 1200 calories per day. Which is right. I want to lose fast but not to fast because I want to keep it off. So can someone please tell me what calories to do. the 1800 or 1200. I want to do what is right.

    Re: 50 + to lose

Your DOCTOR told you to eat 1000 calories a day???  You will lose a tremendous amount of muscle mass and water, not fat, and ultimately, your metabolism would stall due to our starvation reflex.  With lower lean muscle mass, it just becomes a cycle because muscle helps to burn more calories.  You have to eat to lose.  Just make sure what you are eating is good stuff.
