anyone trying to lose weight that was caused by anti-depressants?

I started taking zoloft 1 year ago and within 3 months I had gained 25 pounds.  I have always been thin (5'6" 123 lbs) and did not easily gain weight.  I've read that anti-depressants can slow down your metabolism, which is what I suspect has happened.

I mostly eat healthy foods and work out often, but the weight is not budging.  I weigh 148 now and one time I actually went down to 143 but I think thatt's mainly water weight.

I started alli 12 days ago, but my weight has stayed the same and I'm wondering if it's not going to work with me because of the zoloft.  Is anyone else taking anti-depressants?  I'm curious to know what your experiences are.

I took zoloft for years and quit taking it about a year ago.  I have lost a total of 39 pounds and 7 of which are just since June 14th on Alli.  It is possible, just stick with it.

    Good luck

Re: anyone trying to lose weight that was caused by anti-depressants?

I am withdrawing now from Lexapro, which made me gain weight, and I started alli on july 3 and didn’t loose anything. I think it has to do with lexapro medications. Even though doctor said that it has nothing to do with my metabolism I believe it has. I read so MANY comments about gaining weight on antidepressants. There is no way so many people can be wrong. But also it works for everyone differently. I know some people loose weight on antidepressant medication. Talk to your doctor, see what he can suggest.

I am trying to lose from a number of medications that I am not taking now. I was one of those people that DID lose from the antidepressants but when I stopped taking them my weight sky rocketed. It messes with your metabolism so much!!

Re: anyone trying to lose weight that was caused by anti-depressants?

I was prescribed Effexor for post pardom back in December.  Well, I don't have post pardom, but I feel huge! I just have not been able to lose the baby weight! I am ok everywhere but my belly! I still look pregnant! My doc said that this wouldn't happen with effexor and he will probably tell me that it is not the drug but I have read so many people's testimonys about gaining weight while on this particular antidepressant.

    I am 5' 7 & 190 lbs....I am normally about 160.

I am trying Alli anyway...Wish me luck!

(It can't make it any worse!)

I take Trazadone and Celexa, both antidepressants along with Percocet. It took me 2 1/2 weeks befor I saw any weight loss. so don't give up hun. I have been on Alli for a month now and I have lost 12 lbs now and most of that has happened in the past 2 weeks. you will lose inch's as well, sometimes befor you lose any weight. Stick to it, you will be very happy you did.

I have been taking zoloft for 3 years and my weight was definitely one of the side effects.  I have been on Alli since June 17th and I have lost 15 pounds so far.    Have faith, it does work.

You said you are trying to control your depression through natural methods.  Can you elaborate?

I've been talking to my doctor about tapering off of Lexapro for over a year now.  Unfortunately, I'm at the age where, everytime I start to taper off, some big life change occurs.  Anyway, I noticed that, since I made the decision to lose weight, I have been very cheerful, so I'm giving it another try.  So far, so good, but I do notice a difference in my personality and was wondering if there is something I should do or add to my diet to help keep me well.

Thanks, benay and jrowan69... that's reassuring.  I had been wondering if Alli would still work its magic re: anti-depressant weight gain.  Too bad that antidepressants make you happy, then heavy, and consequently back to depressed.  :-(

Re: anyone trying to lose weight that was caused by anti-depressants?

Zoloft didn't cause me any weight gain but when I switched to Celexa I gained 15 pounds in 4 months.  My doctor prescribed Welburtin to counteract the side efftects and that helped my lose 10 pounds.  I am now off Celexa and Welbutrin and taking Prozac which my Dr. said was the least likely to cause weight gain.

I am currently on Lexapro for anixiety and when i asked my doctor about weight gain as a side effect he told me that weight gain is not one of side effects that it has but since i have been taking it for years now i have noticed my weight gain over the years and i can't stand to even look at myself anymore.
