ALLI AND ABDOMINAL PAIN - CONSTIPATION

I recently began taking Alli and had great success my first week (lost 2.5 pounds). However thge second week I became bloated and constipated and had no weight loss, despite following the same low cal/low fat diet. The middle of my third week - with no weightr loss and fairly severe constipation and bloating, I went to the doctor with all the symptoms of appendicitis. When I checked into the hospital, the pain had subsided and my blood counts had returned to normal, but I still had abdominal pain. I had a CT scan and also an ultrasound of the "innards", and everythign appeared normal with the exception of a thickening of my transverse colon. After speaking with my physician as well as the surgeon, and determining thaqt Alli was the only new variable that had been introduced lately, I was advised to stop taking the drug - at least until my problems were sorted out. Neither of them really thought it was connected, but felt it safer to discontinue use until we find out more about whaqt is happening with me. I am due to have a colonoscopy next month, and I suppose that will give us some more information. My question is this - and I apologige for taking so long to get to it - have any other symptoms such as mine been reported by anyone using either Alli or the prescription form? Thank you

Re: ALLI AND ABDOMINAL PAIN - CONSTIPATION

    Dixiebrooks,

Many people have experienced constipation while on alli, the extent and duration varies.

alli works in the gut by blocking the absorption of about 25% of fat consumed in a meal which is then eliminated through the intestinal tract.  Symptoms may occur when there are other underlying causes. As it states on the package :

Stop use and as a doctor if                                                                                               *severe or continuous abdominal pain occurs.  This may be a sign of a serious medical condition.

Hope that everything checks out fine for you.  You health and safety come first.

Re: ALLI AND ABDOMINAL PAIN - CONSTIPATION

Since about the time I started taking alli, about 4 weeks ago, I've been having pain where my ovaries are--I think.  I had a hysterectomy in 2004, but my ovaries were left.  I just thought it was my ovaries.  Please tell me what the pain is that is mentioned, no post has really said what causes the pain that may occur.  I have a appt. tomorrow morning with my genocologist to check, but tonight decided to check here and there was the many posts about this similar pain.   Not sure if I should keep my appt. due to this being the possible cause.  I don't want to stop taking alli--it's great and has really helped me lose 8 lbs. so far.

    Hi Vickylicky,

The pain most people describe are in the stomach area.  Any pain that is persitent needs to be checked out. Hope your appointment goes well.

    Best of Health.

Re: ALLI AND ABDOMINAL PAIN - CONSTIPATION

Thank you for your quick response, my dr. said that it may be a cyst on my ovary and I am scheduled the 23rd for an ultrasound. I told him about my alli and he questioned me if it feels like cramping, which it doesn't-- really-more like burning and pulling.   Starting on my next bottle of alli in a couple days.   Glad to be on alli--it's the best!

Re: ALLI AND ABDOMINAL PAIN - CONSTIPATION

    Vicky,

I too have an ultrasound on the 27th. I have had (2) non invasive surgeries laproscopic to remove the cysts. I have PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) my doctor put me on Metformin to stop the cysts growth. The metformin works well on Alli and I have much success with both. Be sure to discuss the pcos with your doctor. People with PCOS have trouble gaining weight and insulin is not turned to fuel, therefore, weight gain.  I hope some of this information will help you with your decision after the ultrasound. Have a great day.

    Karen
