Does PMS/Menstrating cause you to gain weight temporarily?

Hi!  I was discouraged this last weigh in.  My weigh in is Sunday, but I weighed myself Saturday just because I was curious and love to see those numbers getting lower everyday.  I lost 5 pounds for the week on Saturday morning.  I then did 8 hours of yard work.  Huge yard, lots of clean up behind the house and in the old shed, threw away 3 tons of junk at the dump, mowed for 2 hours or more, gardened, helped with the gutters and the roof.  I could barely walk at the end of the day because I was so physically worn out.  I also was more hungry than usual that day, but stuck to my nutritional goals.

Sunday morning I was soooo excited to weigh in because I thought I might be a record breaking week for me.  But then I weighed in and had gone up 2 pounds since weighing myslef on Saturday!  I still lost 3 pounds for the week, but I was bummed that I didn't lose more and that I gained 2 pounds when I kicked butt the day before.  I know 3 pounds is good, but I felt cheated!  :(

Could it be because it was right before I started menstrating and drank so much water?  If so, how much weight is reasonable to calculate as your monthly gain due to PMS/menstrating?

Also if that is the case, is there a way to avoid the weight gain?  Take a diuretic or something? Or should I just live with it?

Thanks for your help in advance,

Kind of disappointed, but still thinking optimistically.

wow! You really did kick some butt!! Good job!!

I don't know the answer to your question! Just thought I would say Job Well Done!

I didn't gain any weight, but I stayed exactly the same the week I started :(

I think it might be something we have to just live with......

Keep drinking that water, and I bet by next Sunday you will be very happy!

Thank you!  I'm going to research the subject and I'll post an update if I find out anything.

It's better to stay the same weight than to gain, right?  Keep up the good work!  I appreciate your encouragements!  Thanks again.

Re: Does PMS/Menstrating cause you to gain weight temporarily?

Jenny... I started Alli the week before my cycle. I kept getting on the scale, only to see my weight remain the same. A week into it, on my check in day, I hadn't lost a pound, and was a few days in to my "cycle." I stepped on the scale two days ago after my cycle had ended, and OMG! I'm down 5 pounds in a matter of a few days. I weighed myself this morning with jean shorts, and t-shirt on and had lost another 2 pounds overnight! So, I'm going to say it was not just due to my cycle, water gain, etc, BUT you have to give your body some time to adjust as well. I wasn't discouraged with the lack of weight loss during that time of the month, because I figured my body needed some time to realize that I was actually eating 3 meals, and two snacks. So, don't get discouraged..... Keep doing what you're doing and you'll start to see the weight literally melting off. =D Good Luck!

    Hi Jenny1978,

I know that it's easy to focus on the goal and hard when you take two steps forward and one step back with your weight loss. The weight gain before your period may be something that will happen each month, regardless of what you do. It's not weight gain from what you are eating so it will come off quickly. You can weigh yourself more often that week just to see the weight come down. The rest of the month you can weigh once a week.

    Congratulations on your success,

Well, I picked this as my first post although I have been reading everyone's comments since day 1. OMIGOSH..YES...when I get my monthly I always feel/look bloated..water/fluid retention.. Of course it is different for everyone, but I would be willing to say that bloating is definitely a pms/monthly thing..Good Luck to you!

Re: Does PMS/Menstrating cause you to gain weight temporarily?

Absolutely. I've been on the same diet since January and during my period, I gain up to 5 lbs. It was really frustrating because every 4th week, I would gain and then have to lose the extra weight. I did a little research on the internet - adding calcium and iron seems to be one key, as well as cutting down on sodium a couple of days before whenever your weight gain hits - for some it's during their period, for some it's just before. Once I added the extra calcium and iron, I've seen the menstrual weight gain reduce down to about 2 lbs each time. Pamprin or other OTC products do help a little with the water weight, but not anymore than adding the calcium and iron did for me. But I'm sure it will be a little different for everyone.

They extra exercise you did can also cause temporary swelling/water weight. Drink lots of water!

I started Alli a few days before Scarlett came to visit.  I had lost a few #s on the low fat way of life before the pill so I was discouraged when I gained it back.  As soon as Scarlett was gone I started dropping it fast.  I'm down 7# since Thursday evening July 26!

Many people have had issues during Aunt Flo's visits.  It's pretty normal.  Fortunately I see her every 3 months thanks to my new BC pill, so I don't have as many disappointing weeks.

Wow!  I'm glad to hear it's not only me.  I'm definetly going to try the calcium and iron thing.  And you were right.  My weight did fall off afterward!  I'm now down 22 lbs since starting at the beginning of July.  Fabo!  BTW- I love all of the nicknames for "Aunt Flo" and "Scarlett".  Hilarious.  Keep up the great work ladies and more power to you for your next check in!
