Re: PLEASE spell "lose" and "losing" correctly

Wow! I hope I don't become that crabby while fighting this fat war. Let me guess, we can't blame it on a side effect from the pills, right? LOL If only my grammar was my biggest problem life would be so good!!!

I'm a college student, and my summer physiology professor was telling us about Alli...she said due to its possible side effects, it should be called "A-leak"

    AuriJ:
Not to get schoolmarmish but spelling was standardized several centuries ago for good reason,

Is that true? That's funny because I am moving to Australia in a couple weeks, and that's one thing I have to get used to. Here's why:

I will need to get organised myself when I realise I am not going to have my mum around anymore. And now my sister will be the centre of attention.

That's a small number, but there are thousands of words spelled differently, yet it is English. "Several centuries ago", as in when the US began, or... now I'm curious about what she's talking about. I watch too much history channel LOL. All I know is that being an Office Manager, this will be interesting. Couldn't imagine getting fired over spelling issues! lol

    Oh, and PS

    ProfAnn:

Good luck to all on your weight loss efforts!!!  This Grammar Wars thread makes a nice diversion :-)

Ohhhhh ... now I realise I will have to watch my behaviour around here much more closely. (Mum would slap me if she saw this). Oh well, I'll try to keep head out my nether regions and speak proper! LOL ... this thread was worth a good chuckle. -- Jim

Re: PLEASE spell "lose" and "losing" correctly

Paraphrasing Mark Twain:  "The difference between the right word and the almost right word is as big as the difference between the lightning and the lightning bug."

I might add that it is "oops" and not "opps" -- but I might get flamed.

My sympathies to the op!  ;)

    Hi Annalisa,

As an Aussie who has been in the US now for 30 years, I consider myself "bilingual"--English-wise.  You'll get used to the quirks of the English language once you get to Australia--which part will you be living in ?  Just make sure you don't "root" for your home team--this word has a very base/vulgar meaning in Australia :-)

Good luck on the move and the weight loss.

Re: PLEASE spell "lose" and "losing" correctly

    Hi all,

There was an article in our local paper about how American English began to differ from the Queen's English.  I only skimmed the article.  I think it was during Theodore Roosevelt's time or maybe he started the change of spelling words closer to how they are pronounced.  Hence, realize instead of realise and center instead of centre.  There is also a group now in present day America who want to take it further and change the spelling of words to make it closer to how it is pronounced.  Kind of like phonics.

Does anyone know?  Anyway, it's nice to have these posts...I don't think about the food I am craving when I am reading and chuckling over people's comments.
