Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your calorie goals

It sounds like you were doing a great job.  Sixteen pounds is a great weight loss.

I'm sorry to hear about the death in your family, and when you're ready, you should start the Program again and not be concerned about weight gain.  I think you should continue to keep your Nutrition and Activity Logs so you stay connected to alli.

Then when youre ready to resume eating, you can resume the capsules as well.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your calorie goals

What about foods that turn into fat? ie)sugars, etc.Does alli rid that fat as well or only the fat that is immediately ingested just after eating? Some breads may have almost 0 fat, but will altimately turn to fat because of what's contained in them. Does Alli have any effect on the "after" fat? Thanks.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your calorie goals

ALLI only works to block fat calories.  Any other calories may turn into fat -- but only when consumed in excess.

Though some foods - like white bread - tend to raise blood glucose levels they do not directly turn into fat.  They are metabolized down to glucose.  If that glucose is not needed for energy it will be stored first as glycogen (in the muscles), then any remainder is stored as fat.

Some people who are insulin resistant don't metabolize foods efficiently.  They have high blood sugar levels but the insulin doesn't work on them properly.  There is a theory (underline theory) that these people would do best with diets low in refined carbohydrates and sugar.

    I hope this helps.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your calorie goals

I read once something to the effect,"eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a college student."  I understood it to mean get your calories when you will use them rather than before you go to bed.  I wonder if this was misinformation because I notice the alli program suggests increasing percentages of calories and fat for lunch and more for dinner.

Is the suggested distribution of calories based on a nutritional guideline or an attempt to make an easy transition for those accustomed to American dining culture, i.e., dinner is the biggest meal?  Maybe it is both?

    Looking forward to some feedback!

    Thanks!

Calorie Budget equals calories consumed minus calories burned

Last year (1/07 - 10/07), I lost 40 lbs (172 to 134) through exercise (at least 5 days a week 60 - 90 minutes of cardio/calisthenics) and restricting my calorie budget to 1200 - 1500 calories a day. However, since November 07, I increased my calories budget to 1500 - 3000 a day and reduce my exercising to 4 - 5 days a week for 30 - 60 minutes. Since November, I have only gained about 1 -3 lbs back (depending on the day).  Last year, I noticed a positive correlation between diet, exercise, and calorie budget.  The number of calories you burn through exercise offsets the calorie budget.  If your calorie budget is equal to 1200 calories, then you should consume a diet consisting of 1200 calories. However, when exercise is added to the equation, the number of calories burned should be subtracted from the number of calories consumed to equal the calorie budget. Calorie budget is based on calorie consumption alone. For example, Calories budget (1200) = calories consumed (1200)Calories consumed = 1200 caloriesCalorie budget = 1200 caloriesCalorie budget is based on calorie consumption plus exerciseFor example, calorie budget = calories consumed – calories burnedCalorie budget = 1200Calories consumed = 1200 (1200 – 300 = 900)Calories burned = 300 New calorie budget based on calories consumed – calories burned = 1500 I find this calculation plus the excel spreadsheet I created to be very effective tools in helping me lose weight. I have been on a break since November. Now I am ready to lose the next 20 – 30 lbs (goal weigh 110 - 105 lbs) over the course of the next six months. I will start Alli for the first time on Friday. I am hoping it curbs my overwhelming obsession with carbohydrates (chocolate, ice cream, French fries, cheese etc.)  Cheers,  Minniechemistry

ok, you lost me. Are you saying whatever you burn you should tack on to your intake for that day? so if I reach my 1200, but work off 300, I can or should eat another 300? And I was also wondering; that was a LOT of exercise to only have lost 4-5 lbs a month. What happened? Nat

I am also lost.I think that Alli will not help  to curb cravings because that's not what it claims. So, I will take the simple route.  Not so sure that she really only ate 1200 cals.  Interesting.Nursecat

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your calorie goals

    Hi Betty,

I have been adamant about logging my calories/meals into the nutrition log (LOVE IT!) however, I missed doing yesterdays meals and can't figure out how to go back and log a past date. Can you assist or refer me to someone?

    Thanks...Terry

Yes, the alli diet is about distributing fat and calories throughout the day.  There are several reasons to do that.  Smaller amounts of food are handled more efficiently byt the body.  Eating every few hours helps to stabilize blood glucose levels.  That helps to prevent hunger (and that ravenous feeling that leads to overeating when meals are skipped); and maintain energy levels.

    I hope this helps.

I'm not sure if you can post-date entries, so you might ask this on the Technical Assistance message board.

Betty is now working the Personal Experiences message and Sylvia and I are covering the dietitians message board.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your calorie goals

The alli book says for my weight (206) I should consume 1800 calories per day. I don't currently consume that on a regular basis (although there are days when I do-perhaps twice a month). Should I really increase my intake to 1800 calories given that information. On a regular basis I consume approximately 1400 calories per day. I have been eating less than 1400 since I started alli, but someone pointed out that I may be affecting my metabolism negatively. I have been taking alli for a little over 2 weeks and have lost 7 pounds. I also started walking 30 minutes each morning on the treadmill where before I had no exercise at all.

I'm also finding it hard to get the 1800 cals & 19 g fat per day. Starting week 4 only 1 lb lost. Should I drop down to next level?

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your calorie goals

I was wondering about this as well.  I have been eating low fat for several years, but not necessarily low calorie.  I come pretty close to eating the number of calories Alli says, but my total fat intake is far far less (usually in the neighborhood of 25G total for the day).  Is this part of the problem?  Should I be consuming more fat?

    Thanks,
