Check in for the Fellas ....

Ok, brand spankin' new forum just for us ... I'll start

I'm 44, started on the Alli plan 29 June. Stayed on the Alli Pills until 30 August and continued with the Alli meal plan (calorie and exercise goals). Started strength training last week, now in my 2nd week.

    Starting: 5'10", 231 Lbs.
On 30 August (after 2 months of taking the pills): 202.4 lbs., 1 inch off my waist and hip, and 2 off my belly (total since starting)
On 28 September (one month after stopping the pills): 197.5 lbs., 2 inches off my chest and waist, 3 inches off my belly (total since starting)

How are the rest of us doing?

Best of success to all in attaining your fat loss goals!

    Jim

Re: Check in for the Fellas ....

I started on Alli from the beginning and have lost about 35 since then.  My weight when I first started dieting was 247 and I am now at 203.  I am 56, 5'11" and have about 25 more to loose to get to my BMI weight.  I have lost several inches.  My pants size went from a 42 waist to a 38 and I can fit into some 36 inch size pants.  I would like to end up wearing a size 34 but I'm not sure if that is doable for me.  Anyway, I feel a whole lot better since the weight loss.  I also find the threads both funny and informative.  I actually believe I will keep this weight off permanently. For health reasons, I think I pretty much have to.  As anybody at my age should.

Re: Check in for the Fellas ....

I have been on the program since July 10 and started at 294 and am now at 257 (37 pounds).  I have went from a 50 waist to 44  and from a 3x shirt to a 2x (and they are starting to get loose).  I also have dropped my cholesterol and blood pressure enough that my doc cut both meds by half.  I am exercising moderately (walking 30 minutes most days and light dumbell workouts).  Feel great and plan on continuing to 175 if my body will let me go that far.  I take the pills only when I eat meals that are above 8 grams of fat or more but often only take one or two a day.

    Hey,

I started at 316 five weeks ago. I have since dropped to 304 and have not looked back. I need to work out a bit more, but I think I am doing ok. I have not noticed a lot in clothes sizes, but my clothes are getting looser. I want to get down to 280 by the end of the year and 200 overall.

     Wish me luck,

    Toona

Re: Check in for the Fellas ....

Congrats on your weight loss Toona. You too dave and cruble.

Well, today is my check-in. I'm weighing in at  199.1, which is 1.6 higher than last week, but I'm not stressing.

I can pretty much guarantee those extra pounds are not fat, because I lost 1 inch in measurements during the same week. 1/2 inch off my belly and 1/2 inch off my waist. This is now a net loss overall of 8.5 inches since on the program, and 32 lbs. since joining the program 29 June. I went off the pill 1 September but have been continuing on the rest of the program since then (diet and exercise).

The one "constant" I have noticed is no matter which way the scale is going, up, down or sideways, my measurements always only go one way ... down!

That's why I am more and more strongly coming to the conclusion that measurements are a much more accurate way to gauge progress on this program than the scale.

I can literally "see" my belly getting smaller. This week I fit into "large" t-shirts that I have not been able to wear for years because of my belly AND I look good in them. I bought a medium t-shirt at the same time as the large sized ones, and can't wait until I look good in that too!

Cheers and best of success to you all in your continued weight loss efforts.

Re: Check in for the Fellas ....

Congratulations on your loss Jim (199 pounds is great; I can't weight until I break below that barrier).  You are right, you can be gaining muscle weight but losing size and that is really the best indicator of your success.  Weight is just a form of measurement and the ultimate goal for all of us is to lose fat, not necessary just weight.  Hang in there and keep on "losin".

Re: Check in for the Fellas ....

    Congrats to all :)

I stated one week ago at 306 and am down 9 to 297, it is great to hear others sucess stories.  Like others I have tried other diets etc.. but they have never stuck long term. I am optimistic this may work.  I have followed the calories and fat plan and taken the pills.  I noticed writing down what you eat and drink is big, a few times I was a little hungry but not wanting add anything more to my journal has given the motivation to hold off.  I have already noticed being full much sooner then before.  I am trying to decide on a long term goal, at 6'5" losing 100 from my all time high of 321 would be great be it almost feels unrealistic (but that what the charts say I should do).  I think I will keep setting goals of losing about 15 pounds at a time, and take things one day at a time.

Good luck to all, I hope I am able to add to your success stories in the future.

Congrats to you kbaumler. The fact that you recognized that you needed to make a change and took positive steps is a success story in itself. Anything else is just gravy.

(homer imitation: mmmmm ... gravy .....)

When I started this, quite frankly my goal was to lose weight. At 232 I was not going to be too specific. (I am 7 inches shorter than you). As I started losing weight, I started setting "micro goals".

First was to get out of the Obese BMI classification. I made that in mid-August.

Second was to break the 200 lb. barrier. I made that in mid-September.

Now that I have been on the program 15 weeks, I have a better idea of how I am losing, and have started setting much more specific goals. I am losing about 1.2 lbs. per week, and .75 inches in my measurements. Based on that historical information I have set new goals that take that into consideration. Since my weight loss is so low, it didn't make sense to stay on the Alli medication, so I dropped that the first of September but am continuing with the exercise and diet program, with modifications.

During my 14th week (2 weeks ago), I had my body fat tested using one of the "dunk tank" tests. I came in at 29.2% body fat. My new long term goal is to get that into the "healthy" body fat range of 17% by mid-February.

My next micro-goal is my next dunk test in about 5 weeks, where I have a goal to get to 24% body fat.

In order to reach that goal, I have tweaked my diet a little, and have added strength training (I did no strength training for the first 13 weeks on the program). I have also increased my cardio workouts from 43 minutes to 1 hour each.

My next micro-goal is to get my waist down to 40 inches from a current 43.5 inches. (A 40 inch waist indicates an increased risk factor for men and heart disease). I am projecting hitting that goal by mid-December if things go well. When I started I was at 46 inches, so I think this is doable.

I am anticipating that by early December the weight loss is going to become much more difficult because I am going to be near  the 180s, where my body tends to gravitate. At that point I may mix up the diet a bit more and change around the cardio and strength training program.

My long term goal (endpoint) is to get into the healthy BMI category, with a weight of 174 lbs. or less. I figure to be there around mid February.

As you get into this more you will get a better idea of how your body is losing weight and can set some specific goals for yourself.

Best of success to you on your weight loss journey.

    Jim

Re: Check in for the Fellas ....

    Hello Gentlemen -

Glad to see I'm not the only guy taking Alli.........all the results are awesome!

I started back in July at 275 and am down to 208. Don't have a particular goal weight in mind yet though as someone else noted my "normal" BMI weight range starts around 173 (not sure if that is realistic).

I've always gained and lost weight quickly so my challenge this time around is keeping it off.

I noticed several people have stopped the Alli but continued tracking and journaling. Did you notice any slowing of your weekly weight loss (I've slowed to 3-4lbs per week)?

    Good Luck to all!

Re: Check in for the Fellas ....

     Mark:

Just saw your question today. I stopped taking Alli 1 September but have continued a reduced diet and exercise following the Alli plan, just not with the pill.

I am continuing to lose weight at approximately the same pace, 1.25 lbs. a week. At that rate the extra expense of the Alli didn't make sense for maybe an extra pound a month.

Since stopping the pill, I am down an additional 5.5 lbs. and 3.5 inches in measurements.

I am very satisfied with my continued weight loss and expect to maintain course until I reach my goals, at which point I will re-adjust my diet to maintenance levels.

    Hope this answers your question.

Re: Check in for the Fellas ....

    Hello All

Glad to have found you. from reading your posts I want to grow up to be just like you. All of you have done well. Please feel free to give me some advise as to how I can get to where you are.

I am 46, starting my third week, I have to say I lost 10 lbs the first 9 days, I am sure it's water weight. started 29 Sept 07.  237- 227, Lost none for second week. Goal would be 200 then 180 and hold. Not having treatments, but I am having trouble eating 1800 & 19 g, believe it or not.

I do exercise at the gym, some say maybe to much exercise and not enough eating. it's a struggle everyday.

    Good luck to you all

Re: Check in for the Fellas ....

I'm very excited to get started. My start date for the program is this coming up Monday. I'm 34 and 6'0" and 249lbs. I would like to ultimately get a 1 in front of that weight but my short terms are more realistic. I'm shooting for 235 on my 5% step1 goal. I've been noticing my clothes fitting tighter, my fingers getting fatter (wedding ring no longer fits), and I have a total lack of energy. I've tried other fad diets such as sugarbusters and adkins both with a little physical push but I've never continued with any program. With my weight approaching the 250 mark (and going over in the last month by a few), it was a wake up call that I had to do something. The physical aspect of these things are what always get me. The motovation always drops off after the first few weeks and I find myself 'cheating' on the exercise. I've grown to be pretty weak and that is hurting me at work (I work for the phone company and have to climb daily for a living). I will find ways around doing the right thing and usually land myself in trouble because of my laziness and lack of energy. I will be thankful if this plan works for me not only due to looking and feeling better but it will keep me employed! (that and we have a 250lb limit for climbers and I'm currently kissing that limit). I have 2 obsticles that I need to face. 1st is my love for fine german beer. I posted in the beer thread about my love for Guinness. It's a social thing for me. Me and friends get together a few times a month at a pub and we have a few beers while complaining about our wives, our jobs, and anything else that annoyed us since the last gathering. It's going to be very tough to find a 'manly' replacement but I know it has to be done. The other is my fit wife. I am married to a woman who is a busybody and a workaholic. She is in great shape and has no problems working off the extra calories of whatever we eat. She's already proclaimed her 'lack of excitement' for the new menu I'll be following but I think she'll come around in the end. (at least I hope she will). It's going to be tough to not only change myself but change how the family goes about life. It's alot to ask for someone else to adjust because you have lost control. I will be starting my plan next week so we are emptying the pantry of EVIL this weekend. Wish me luck > check in is Nov5th.

Re: Check in for the Fellas ....

So glad to see a forum for the men.  The main forums are obviously female dominated.

So, I started taking the pills yesterday under the advisement of my doctor.  I have struggled with weight my whole life, but have let things get WAY out of hand since getting married 7 yrs ago.  I am 31 yrs old, 5'10" and 296 lbs.  The highest I've ever seen on a scale is 314 lbs.  That scared me.  Another thing that get's me down mentally is the fact that now I have had to start seeking out the "Big & Tall" sections; therefore, I can't just shop at any store for clothes.  Of course, it ain't because I'm in the Tall category!!  So, I have to do something.  I have two young children that I look forward to playing with, but I don't want to be the 'fat dad' that can't get around quickly enough to participate.  My wife has also made it clear that my hefty frame doesn't do much in getting her heated up...

I am not unrealistic in my goals, but I have shown a lack of commitment before that has kept me from dropping more than 20 lbs at a time (only to gain back more).  I don't see myself as a 5'10" 175 lb man, so I will be elated once I see the scale near 225 or so.  Who knows, maybe WHEN I get to that point, another 50 pounds will be more enticing.

Over the last year I have considered weight loss surgery.  This is a last ditch effort to avoid the knife.  I want to show myself and others that I can make this happen on my own.  However, I know my weaknesses, and they're usually smothered in gravy!

I appreciate seeing other men, of similar size struggling and admitting to struggling like I am.  If there's anything I can offer as support, please don't hesitate to ask.  Best of luck to all of us!
