    change in menstrual cycle

I read somewhere that alli changes menstrual cycle.  One woman said her periods stopped while taking alli (no she was not pregnant)  I wouldn't mind that side effect. Is there any truth to this?

    Re: change in menstrual cycle

I'm by no means an expert on this.. only a lowly premed undergrad, but I do have PCOS and I know my endocrinology at least in that regard.

What I'm thinking is that heightened insulin levels actually cause an increase in the amount of androgens (male hormones) the ovaries produce. This causes abnormal follicular maturation (the growth and passing of the egg).

I'm sure people's bodies adjust to this if it's been their way of life for a long time. Buuut once the dieting and all that starts really affecting things like insulin levels, it could throw off the hormone levels and as a result, it might throw off menstruation cycles.

This is all guess work on my part - I don't really know why alli would cause periods to be nonexistent.. if anything I'd expect the opposite.

    Re: change in menstrual cycle

Hello Powersec5, Thank you for a very good answer. =) I too was wondering if I was going to have period problems. Anyways, I have PCOS as well and recently went on the birth control pill...so far so good. But the most ick side effect is getting unwanted hair in unwanted places. It is really driving me nuts. Do you have this problem? ( I've heard that not everyone with PCOS have it) How do you combat it if you do have it? So far Alli has been the best thing that has happened to me. I'm hoping that with this program I will be able to lose the weight and maybe the PCOS will calm down a bit. =) Thanks for sharing you knowledge with us. Good luck to you in school! katesh

    Re: change in menstrual cycle

     Hi Katesh!

Yea PCOS is a real pain.. I've been dealing with it (aka taking the pill) since I was about 16. The only real issue I've had with hair growth is just on my face, but it's very fine and luckily I'm blonde so it's not as bad as it could be.. but I notice it. The only way I've dealt with it is just with one of those buzzing hair trimmer things .. I have nooo idea what they're called, but it helps hahaha

But yea, I'm also hoping that with alli and weight loss, I may be able to put the PCOS behind me. We'll seee!

How far along in the program are you??
