Help! Omelet in a bag question

ok, so I read the post on the omelet in a bag, and thought, wow, i want to try it.  So this morning I put my egg and egg whites in the bag, my onion, green peppers and cheese.  Put the bag in the pot of boiling water, turned around to put a load of clothes in the dryer and started smelling burning plastic.  Needless to say, I started a small fire on my stove with the edge of the bag hanging out of the pot, so I realized it was important to put the whole bag down in the pot next time.  But........I dont want to.  I want to know if anyone microwaves this stuff, and if so, how long do you mike it and does it still taste just as good?

    thanks..........Tammy   aka 'firebug'

Re: Help! Omelet in a bag question

I would suggest purchasing the Glad or Ziploc steamer bags - they work WONDERFULLY in the microwave :)    My experience of putting a regular ziploc bag in the microwave - they get VERY flimsy whereas the steamer bags keep their shape and don't "breakdown" while cooking in the microwave.  These are what I use to make a baked apple for lunch at work :)

Recently there has been a lot of information coming out about cooking, and particularly microwaving, in plastics.  Some studies have indicated that they release toxic chemicals into your food when heated.  Though the FDA has decided that the levels of these toxins are acceptable, why take chances?  I always use microwave safe glass containers now.

I'm sure the Ziploc information is correct and their products are dioxin free.  However, as the autthor of a MW cookbook, I pretty much use glass (Pyrex).  It's not very expensive, and dishwasher friendly.  CorningWare is another good container to use in the MV and looks attractive on the table as well.
