Would somebody slap me, scold me, and brainwash me?!

I have been in a major lazy slump. Just when I lost about 27 pounds, I got all nonchalant and lazy about my dieting. I am backsliding BAD!  It's been 6 weeks off now and I can feel the pounds creeping back up.  (actually I have only gained 1 or 2, but we all KNOW that is how we all ended up the 20, 30, 50, 100, ect we are trying to lose) So, I need some STRONG reinforcement, some stern guidance, SOMETHING!  I feel like I have totally lost my motivation and I wish I could get the mindset I had back in June and July.  I have a nearly full bottle of alli at home now, but I keep not using it regularly and I have been having good homecooking, and I feel like I just can't get back on track.  Someone please brainwash me!!

Ok, take a deep breath, look in the mirror, with your clothes off and say:

    • I deserve this
    • I'm worth it
    • I can do it
    • I will do it
    • One day at a time.

    Repeat tomorrow.

Re: Would somebody slap me, scold me, and brainwash me?!

Okay Hugh, I cannot slap, scold or brainwash you, but I will encourage you.  I just started Alli and I am really looking forward to being successful with this.  I've dieted so many times and enough is enough.  When you first started Alli you were siked and excited right?  Get it back.  Schucks you lost 27 pounds...now is not the time to start back-sliding.  I wish it was me who lost the 27 pounds if you're not appreciating it.. there are many of us out there who are just starting out and would love to be losers...so stop feeling sorry for yourself (trying to be tough - LOL!) and get back to working the program - the way it should be worked, and not your customized back-sliding plan, afterall, you've paid your money and that good ole homecooking food is not going anywhere.  Now if you do the food in moderation you can enjoy it...but if you abuse it, only you will suffer and you deserve better than that...you proved it by losing the 27 pounds in the first place..SO JUST DO IT!!!

Re: Would somebody slap me, scold me, and brainwash me?!

The past is past!  Forget about the backslide and start fresh.  Push that mental "Reset" button!Regroup and act as if it's your first day on the plan.  Take the pills and track what you eat.

This is an especially difficult time of the year.  We're bombarded with an abundance of foods, commercials and television shows about roasted turkey and all of the trimmings...As someone who loves to cook I know how tempting it can be to pull out those favorite high-calorie recipes on the weekend. But remember, good home cooking doesn't necessarily have to be high in fat and the alli plan should have begun to teach you how to control your portion size. I now enjoy the challenge of finding new recipes and adapting old recipes to meet my new lifestyle goals.  It's possible to find more health-conscious recipes for some of your favorite home-cooked foods.  This weekend I made a low fat mac and cheese that I had seen on the Food Network ("Healthy Appetite" with Ellie Krieger).  It was delicious and satisfied my urge to cook and eat comfort food.  I've managed to keep my portion sizes down, and I have enough left over to enjoy for lunch throughout the week.

Re: Would somebody slap me, scold me, and brainwash me?!

hughz79, if you kept a regular journal and a complete nutrition log, then you may be in possession of the instruction manual for getting back on track. Read them over, multiple times if necessary, and try to figure out what you were doing right before. And regardless of your backsliding, keep an accurate nutrition log. We can't slap or scold you long distance, but confronting yourself with calorie and fat totals every day may give you a needed jolt.

    Time limit...

Maybe give yourself a time limit.  You can have a break for one more week, then get yourself prepared to start all over again like you did the first time, but this time you just have less to lose.

Re: Would somebody slap me, scold me, and brainwash me?!

I know how you feel.  I do this after every diet.  A few weeks in  I've lost my motivation.  But one thing I keep thinking about is after the fact "I was there!!  Why didn't I stay there?"  Here's your chance to say "I am here, I can catch it now.  Fresh weight gain of a couple pounds is easy to come off if you get back on the bandwagon.  Do it for yourself and for all of us who need a good slap, too!!

Only 3 more pounds to a 30 pound loss!!  Keep it up, that's great!!

I LOVE that answer!  Too funny......When I first read it I guess I kind of skimmed and didn't notice the "with your clothes off" part.  So when I noticed that I laughed out loud!!!  :)

But that being said.......The self-affirmation overall is a great one!

Re: Would somebody slap me, scold me, and brainwash me?!

What was your motivation back in June when you bought your first bottle of pills?  I think you are in a unique place than most of us now in that you know you can maintain your weight for a good period.  Can you think back to other diets you've been on and say the same after losing focus for 6 weeks?  You've made the biggest changes in your eating already and I think you said in your last post that you were still exercising.  So you know this plan works and you can lose another 10 lbs by Christmas by doing just a little more....YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

Re: Would somebody slap me, scold me, and brainwash me?!

    Hi Hughz79,

I see that you got a lot of really great advice, but haven't seen a response from what you thought of the suggestions that were given. Did any of this help you?

I would recommend that you ask yourself why you shouldn't just keep eating whatever you want? What's the big deal if you gain the weight back? I want you to think back to what it was like to be at your starting weight and compare that to now. What if you woke up tomorrow and weighed that?

Let me know what answers you come up with,

    Betty Kovacs, MS, RD

Re: Would somebody slap me, scold me, and brainwash me?!

thank you everyone, for the stern advice and talking to.  I really needed to hear that.  Of course I KNEW what I have been doing wrong, but it just helps to hear it from someone else, know what I mean?  I am pleased to report that I have had a good couple of days!  I climbed the stadium stairs 2 times on tuesday, and ate decently, and wednesday I ate extremely well!  (but skipped the exercise since my calves hurt from the stairs! lol. doesn't take long to get out of shape!!). I made homemade veg/beef soup which is super tasty, and low in fat and calories.  I will be eating a lot of it the next few days, so Hopefully I'll stay on track easier with yummy healthy food.  I just need to stay in the groove for a couple more days and it'll be like old times! lol.  I am starting off like new here, since I was of the plan for about 6 weeks, so hopefully I will be refreshed and ready to start dropping more pounds.  Do you think I'll get the dramatic drops like most of us had the first couple weeks?  And Betty, yes I remember what it feels to be my start weight, and it sucked!!  I guess I grew complacent with 178 since it's the skinniest I've been in a while it felt ok to sorta slack.  But I want more....or less, actually. lol. I will try to drop at least 10 pounds by Christmas.   I wish you could instantly gain the weight that bad food gets you, to think that it would be deposited so quickly on my body would certainly deter me from straying from the plan!!

Re: Would somebody slap me, scold me, and brainwash me?!

    Hi Hughz79,

It's very normal to forget what it felt like to be at your heavier weight and to get complacent with the weight that you are at. I recommend that you write up a list of what it was like at that weight and put a picture of you from then on that paper. Whenever you find yourself slipping, take a look at that as a reminder of where you don't want to go back to. You can also make a list of what it will be like to get to your goal weight and use that for positive motivation.

It's great to still have you with us,

    Betty Kovacs, MS, RD
