Food that help curb my hunger

if you are interested, here are some foods that help me curb my hunger

    Apples

An apple a day keeps my cravings at bay. High-fiber foods like apples generally require more chewing time, giving my body extra time to register the fact that im no longer hungry.  Therefore, im less likely to overeat.

And apples are also a natural anti-inflammatory.

    Pine Nuts

As I read on the lable and compared it to others, have the most protein out of all of the nuts I looked at!

    Flaxseeds

Flaxseed oil is the best known plant source of omega-3 fats but raw flaxseeds are even better, especially for appetite control. In addition to the omega-3, one ounce of flaxseeds provides the added benefit of  8 grams of fiber!! The more fiber you eat at any meal or snack, the slower the rise in your blood sugar, helping to keep the hunger hormones at bay!

I like to put flaxseeds  onto salads, thrown into smoothies or sprinkled over vegetables.

    Oatmeal

Real oatmeal -- not instant -- is one of the healthiest carbohydrates.  It's low on the glycemic load scale and has a high fiber content, so it enters your bloodstream slowly and keeps you full for a long time. One bowl of oatmeal consumed daily can reduce cholesterol 8 to 23 percent.

For breakfast or as a snack I eat  a small bowl makes an excellent hunger reducer for me

I suggest adding a little I can't believe its not butter or a handful of pine nuts for longer-lasting fullness. Or how about sprinkling on some ground flaxseed or cinnamon? YUMMO!

    Salad

I avoid overeating by eating a small salad before a meal.  The fiber helps slow the entrance of glucose (sugar) into the bloodstream, making you less likely to be hungry. SoupSoup is one of the best kept secrets to appetite control and weight loss.

The secret is soup's combination of high water and low calories. Make sure to choose broths or vegetable soups, not their creamy-rich cousins.

    Green Drinks

Green drinks are becoming more popular and are now available premade in many grocery stores. For me the best ones are made with a mix of high-cholorophyll, detoxifying organic grasses like wheatgrass and vegetables (like spinach). You can make your own from powders sold at health food stores or buy ready-made drinks (but read the label and watch out for added sugar and calories).

Typically, these drinks should be low in calories, very low in sugar and loaded with enzymes and phytonutrients. For me they have the ability to take the edge off your appetite very effectively.

    Umeboshi Plums

I Can't control my sweet tooth!

Umeboshi plums -- basically pickled plums

Need a quick fix? Try dipping a chopstick or spoon into a jar of umeboshi plum paste and licking it off next time you have a sugar craving, It helps me out a lot!

Re: Food that help curb my hunger

Hi Kelley! Good topic for a thread!!!

Here are my foods that take the edge off of my appetite:

*Kashi 'Go Lean Crunch' cereal (1/2 C = 95cals/1.5gmFat/4gmFIBER!) with 1/2C Nonfat organic milk (40cal/0gm Fat)

*Yoplait Whips yogurt (140cal/2.5gmFat) Lots of good flavors.

    *Kelloggs Protein Water (bottled 16.9oz = 50cal/0Fat/5gmProtein/5gmFIBER!)

My hunger peaks around 6-7pm and we don't have dinner until 8pm as my husband gets home at 6:30 and does a 90min weight lifting session 5 nights a week.

I have come to rely on the above foods to get my thru until I serve us dinner; I work them into my food log and then I just eat less of the dinner foods! It works great for me!

    Anyone else??

Just remember you have to GRIND the flazseeds BEFORE you eat them or they go undigested! Dr. Oz said that to Oprah and she never knew to do that first. he said the shell is too stable to break down so they will "go through" undigested, unablt to release all the good oil and nutrients!

I use a coffee grinder that I use only for spices!

Re: Food that help curb my hunger

This is exactly what I have been looking for. I have been at my wits end trying to find something to curb my appetite at night because that is when I tend to overeat. I will definately give some of these a try.  I am sorry, I dont have any of my own tips to contribute just yet. I have wondered about the flaxseeds and sprinkling them on foods. Do they have a taste?

Thank you so much for this post!

Thanks to carol joy, i put all my flax seeds into the coffee grinder, I usually eat them with my breakfast in yogurt, a little gritty, but no taste.

Re: Food that help curb my hunger

My favorite is a Granny Smith apple cut up into wedges and then dipped into peanut butter.  Just be careful not to over do the peanut butter because of calories and fat grams.  It's a great hunger buster! :)  I try to always buy the fresh ground peanut butter found in the deli area at WF or any other health food store to avoid the extra chemicals and preservatives.

Also orange sections dipped in FF vanilla yogurt.  I especially like this for a morning snack.

My main concern is getting my fruit and veggies in for the day, sometimes that's a challenge for me!

    Love the suggestions here.

Re: Food that help curb my hunger

    Hi everyone!
I have a new 'hunger-stopper- snack that I have used to replace the Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal with nonfat milk ( I was getting really gassy!) I eat this about 2hrs before dinner and it is really doiong the trick!

I weigh out 2oz of turkey breast I found by 'Jennie-O' Sun-dried tomato turkey breast lunchmeat.
    2oz = 50 calories and 0.5gm fat

I then roll it up into 2-3 romaine lettuce leaves.
    0 cals / 0 fat

It is crunchy, filling, lean, and it really takes the pre-dinner edge off my hunger! Best thing is I don't go over in cals/fat at dinner time!

I think you could use any type of turkey lunchmeat as long as it is low in fat...and most are!

    Carol Joy

p.s. Linda...I have done the JIF reduced calorie peanut butter spread in celery stalks before, which is great too!

Re: Food that help curb my hunger

Have to say I love to eat Greek style yogurt, frozen blueberries, sprinkle of Splenda and  a teaspoon  of ground flax meal.  Just let the berries sit in the yogurt to defrost a bit. Fills me up and tastes really great. Have to figure out the fat grams/ calories, sorry I don't know what this is.

One other thing I like is 8th Continent chocolate soy milk, I usually buy the light.  After a workout this really hit the spot.

I think flaxseed has a bit of a "nutty" taste. I love it on salads and in yogurt. You can also put it into meatloaf, spaghetti, all kinds of stuff to help you get your fiber in!

Re: Food that help curb my hunger

You are right Kelley! You can 'hide' that a bit by adding frozen strawberries or raspberries to the blender with the yogurt,: the seeds help to mask it.

Also, if you are having a hearty soup, the ground flaxseeds aren't as noticable there.

Also try mixing them with a couple tablespoons of reduced calorie peanut butter, then spreading on a whole grain frozen waffles or toast. Be sure you count the fat grams as it will be 12gm if you use 2T of JIF reduced calorie type PB!

Re: Food that help curb my hunger

One of my favorites (and I'm going to revive it) is celery stalks with lo-fat flavored cream cheese.  I love the vege flavored variety the best.  A nice snack and is crunchy and pretty healthy.

Re: Food that help curb my hunger

Another way to enjoy celery...this is my all time favorite and my kids love it too...

mix a touch of honey in with some almond butter and put in celery sticks

Almond butter in a jar is ok, but if you have a whole food market around and can get it ground from fresh almonds, that is really the best because there is no additives in it, no sugars or anything.

Another fav of mine is a simple fruit smoothie, without yogurt or milk.Berrys are great in smoothies. You can add some protein mix in to give it something extra or even a green drink mix. You can also add the ground flaxseed. My kids love these too. I can make a big blender full of smoothie and it won't last long, everyone is there with their glasses in hand.

Re: Food that help curb my hunger

I tend to be on the go alot during the week running the family to and from all of their activities, I keep a couple of the Fiber One bars in my glove box, they taste really good and they have 9g of fiber so it's a nice boost a great afternoon snack when you're on the run and don't have time to prep or eat other things, my kids even like them:) and they sure stick with you! I have even eaten them for a breakfast on the go, but not too often as they only have 3-4g of fat and I try to get atleast 10 at breakfast. I love the ideas everyone has posted here! The celery with flavored lf lc cream cheese yum! I bet the flaxseed would blend really well with the veggie cream cheese, will be trying that one today
