    night time hunger

what can i do about night time hunger?i take my allipills throughout the day and i stay within my calories and fat grams but i am so active during the day that i dont sit and think about food, but when night time rolls around and im unwinding from the day, ive already had my dinner and sometimes even a dessert and i still feel so hungry that sometimes i eat more of somethig which goes past my intake allowance.my husband says its because im not consuming enough throughout the day when im most active.is that true?i have an under active thyroid wich is regulated with meds and although i know that this plan says that i should consume 1800 cal. a day that only makes me maintain the current weight. if  i stay at or under 1000 cal aday i lose even my dr.told me to stay at that.i have lost about 16lbs with this plan and i like what i see but whats a slow metabolism girl to do when the night time hunger or chocolate cravings hit?

    Re: night time hunger

I have the same problem. At first I was going over cals bc at night I was hungry. I also stay up late...so 5 hrs after dinner when im still awake isnt it only natural to get hungry again. And i cant fall asleep if im hungry.

SO, Now..... I save calories. I try to cut calories from my other 3 meals in the day so I have enough to eat at night when Im hungry. I eat about a 1500 cal diet. So i try to stay around 1100 or 1200 for breakfast , lunch , and dinner.. which is fine and satisfying bc like u said during the day ur running around not thinking about eating necessarily. This way i have a couple hundred cals at night. Ill eat a 100 cal dessert and then if im hungry late Ill eat low cal bread w hummus or a granola bar.. or something like that that w protein that will fill me up. side note: it also leaves me calories in case I need a pc of chocolate =P

    Robin:

I like tea--I'm just wondering why it is considered "a trick". You can exchange tea for one of your waters.  Maybe I'm not getting something.  My only eating disorder is I like to eat.

Fill me in please, I'm very curious about this.

    Re: night time hunger

haha.. sorry, i realize i wasnt clear.

Its just that tea can help curb your apetite....take away some of the hunger your feeling.

    Re: night time hunger

Thanks Robin--I thought it might be something else.  I enjoy tea all day, but darn if I'm still not hungry--but it is getting close to that time of month--so I have a monster raging in me.

Take care and enjoy your day.

    Re: night time hunger

Janet, I think Robin suggests tea as something to take the edge off.  Tea doesn't have calories, so there's no trick to it that way.  It's just better than colas, or diet colas.  I drink iced tea all day long at work (decaf).  But nothing takes the place of food, so the habit I've gotten into is that I make a large size package of non-fat, non-sweet chocolate pudding (the kind you cook) and divide it into four bowls, put plastic wrap on each, and put them in the fridge.  Then every night for four nights I know I have a tasty treat waiting for me after dinner or before bed or whenever.  I use nonfat milk, so there's hardly any calories to it, and no fat.  I often put a dollop of nonfat Cool Whip on top of my nightly serving for the feeling of extra decadence, even though there isn't any.  Everybody has to find their little trick that works for them, Robin's is tea, mine is chocolate pudding.

    Re: night time hunger

Samrthing happens to me. I do really great during the day and once I get home, it's a disaster. I get hungry and anxious. During the day I'm so busy with work I don't even think about food. What I do is have a snack around 9-9:30 pm with a glass of juice or iced tea. It really helps.

    Re: night time hunger

    Hi Jcbennett,

It can be frustrating to walk around hungry at night like this. It sounds like you are not consuming enough food during the day. I don't know how tall you are or how much you weigh so that may impact my view on this. Right now, 1000 calories or less sounds too low when your requirements are 1800. You can post your height, age, weight, and activity level and I will give you an accurate calorie goal if you would like. You may actually be able to eat some more food and lose weight.

I'll check back for your information,

    Betty Kovacs, MS, RD

    Re: night time hunger

I hve always been a night-time eater, but I have found if I eat everything I should during the day (calories and fat) I am not hungry in the evening.  If I am, I usually have a 4 oz yogart.  I am finding just something little takes my hunger away if I am eating right.

Of course, the first two weeks of eating differently I was starving all the time.  It took about two weeks to work all the sugar, carbs and high fats out of my system I guess.

The suggestion for the no fat pudding is a great idea!

    Lynn
