Smoothies and a warning for "low fat" items

For me, eating enough dairy each day is touch, well really impossible. So i've started making smoothies for breakfast. Depending on the smoothie, they are usually around 150 calories if you eat just one serving but I tend to eat two because I'm not allowed to eat much during work (i'm a hostess) so I often go up to 8 hours without eating more than a Kashi bar. It's important to make healthy ones though, instead of the ones that call for vanilla ice cream is use the ones with milk and yogurt and pleanty of fruit of course! Sometimes I mix in some wheat germ or spinach just for the nutritional value.

Also I want to warn everyone against eating low fat things such as cheese and yogurt and especially mayo! Read the ingredients first because most of the time if they're labeled low fat that means it's not fully natural which means your body won't know how to process it as opposed to if it was natural (except for mayo which isn't close to being natural). Also, low fat items usually have partially hydrogenated oils and just other ingredients that are really bad for you!

Just remember to stay away from foods with the following ingredients:

partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, enriched or bleached wheat flower (or anything enriched)

stick to the most natural foods you can find and the foods with the least amount of ingredients on the label!

Re: Smoothies and a warning for "low fat" items

I have smoothies often for breakfast or even my late evening snack. My smoothies are frozen fruit, usually strawberrys, ice, low fat yogurt, and a banana, water or about a 1/2 cup skim milk with a touch of splenda.

By using frozen strawberries and ice, they turn out to be more like a strawberry milkshake.

    Tasty!

Re: Smoothies and a warning for "low fat" items

I'm always in need of a little something after my run, and trying to get my fat intake up.  So my smoothies consist of ice, skim milk, protein powder, fruit of my choice, and milled flax seed.  Has always turned out yummy and is a great way to up my fat/protein/fiber for the day :)

Is Fat Free Kraft Mayo okay to use during this low fat program?  Is there hidden fat?

Re: Smoothies and a warning for "low fat" items

If it ssays Fat Free it has to be fat free.  Keep in mind that if there is less than 1g of fat per serving it can be labeled as 0g.  So if there is 1/2g in one serving which happens to be 1 tablespoon, and you eat 2 Tablespoons then you have just consumed 1g fat. In other words, stick with the portion size to be safe. I do believe there is high fructose corn syrup in it so it may be higher in calories than regular mayo.

A good reduced fat mayo to use is Hellmans Canola.  It contains half of the calories, no transfat and tastes great.
