The Only Thing I Want is Popcorn

Hi!  This is my first day on the Alli plan and I am super excited.  I started with my dieting and exercise program about a month and a half ago and have already lost ten pounds.  Now that I am set with that part, I figured I was ready to start Alli.  What brings me to the message boards is that I know my weakness...popcorn.  I love it.  (And I need help so that it doesn't undermine my weight loss plan.)  I love salty, buttery things.  Chocolate and sweets hold absolutely no temptation for me.

Unfortunately, it seems like most of the substitutions available for desserts are to help you resist the sweets.  I need to resist the salt.  Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

    Hi Traebuy

Popsecret has 100 calorie microwavable bags.  They are butter flavored, and really really good.   Give them a try, I think you'll like it.

I totally agree with you--I can resist candy, ice cream and any dessert you throw at me. But salty, buttery things are my downfall.  One ok substitute for me is pretzels with tomato or V8 juice--I'll add some tabasco sauce to the juice to spice it up.  Another good snack is Laughing Cow reduced fat cheese with multi-grain crackers.

Re: The Only Thing I Want is Popcorn

I love popcorn also but what I do is put them in  the microwave inside of a brown lunch bag so that they are air popped.  You can also put then in a popcorn popper so that they are air popped. I take them out and spray them with a fat free vegetable oil spray and then add the white chedder popcorn seasoning.

    This is a great snack.

Re: The Only Thing I Want is Popcorn

Have you tried the imitation butter spray on your popcorn?  I spinkle salt on the popcorn before I close the paperbag and put it in the microwave.  When the popcorn is done, I'll spray the imitation butter onto the popcorn and add a little more salt.  I used to do a salt substitute...I have no clue why I'm not using it anymore; it wasn't all that bad.

Re: The Only Thing I Want is Popcorn

On of my co-workers uses an air poper, and sprays the popcorn with the I can't believe it's not butter spray, then sprinkles on garlic powder or Mrs Dash's Italian seasoning.  There are a couple other seasonings he uses, but I can't remember the others ones.

My hubby and I will use season salt.

Re: The Only Thing I Want is Popcorn

i agree about the popcorn, they have 100 calorie packs of pop secret popcorn which is good, then they have a really good one but its splurging a lil on the calories but the bag is like 2 times the size of the 100calorie packs, but its 230 calories, long as you dont go to overboard is fine, and for the sweet tooth try the frosted strawberry creme mini wheats, they are delish, and you can eat like 24 biscuits and is only 180 calories.i have a sweet tooth as well. for chocolate low cal and yummy im still looking, lol.

The brown bag is such a great idea. How much popcorn do you pop and for how long?

Some salty snacks I would suggest would be Pretzels, and Trader Joe's has these wonderful brown rice crackers. They are flavored with Soy Sauce. Trader Joe's also sells these amazing veggie chips. They are made with real veggies. They are salty and tastey!

Re: The Only Thing I Want is Popcorn

When I make popcorn with the brown paper bag, I put just enough kernals to cover the bottom.  I also sprinkle salt in the bag before it goes into the microwave.

    Enjoy!

Re: The Only Thing I Want is Popcorn

well each bag of the 100 calorie count bag is just 1 serving so you can eat the whole bag if you wanted cus its 1serving and 100 calories so 1 bag= 100 calories 2bag=200 and so on and so on, and you just do it for 3 minute 15 second and is perfect, almost every kernel pops then.

Hi I use the curve pop corn.   I like the brown bag and pop corn.   I may try that.  I love popcorn too.

Re: The Only Thing I Want is Popcorn

I went to a sewing party and one of the ladies made healthy snacks. She air-popped some popcorn and brought different toppers for us to shake on:

    taco seasoning

    old bay seasoning

parmsean (note: real parmesean is also low and fat and because it is high on flavor, you use less so it's worth the splurge, I think)

    Cajun seasoning

JELLO powder! *this was a great idea and mimics those gourmet candied popcorns

    Dried broccoli-cheese soup mix

    NORI (Dried seaweed)

    Onion Salt

    Dill Salt

    Salt/Sesame seeds

Now, I haven't tried this but I bet you could even make a low-fat caramel sauce with a low-fat "butter" and brown sugar (brown splenda) Or better, yet, drizzle a container of that low-fat caramel apple dipping sauce on your popcorn.

Stay away from microwave popcorn. It gets its buttery flavor from diacetyl, a dangerous chemical that may cause "popcorn lung"

Re: The Only Thing I Want is Popcorn

Hi I went to walmart and got the mircro popcorn bowl.  Wow I love it.  No more bag popcorn and i can flavor it my own way and not worry about whats in the bag with all the preserv. stuff.  I also got the white chedder topping.  YUMMY  i also use smart butter spray as well.  I love mircro air popper its great.  I tried the brown bag popped i find it doesnt pop all the kernals in the bag.  The bowl is better and pops everything in the bowl.
