Newbie with Irritable Bowel Syndrom -D

Hi, I will be starting Alli on Friday, June 27, 2008 but I will start the low fat diet starting Monday, June 23rd.  I have IBS-D, and I am aware that if you eat something high in fat that you could get diarrhea.  I was just wondering how this would affect the IBS that I have and the trouble I have already with diarrhea.  In order for me not to have diarrhea I take Immodium Advanced a couple of times a week, and it is working on controlling my IBS-D.  Is it okay to take Immodium with Alli, because I would not want to get diarrhea like i have with the IBS.  Any Suggestions.  Also, I do workout 4 to 5 times a week already, so I believe with the Alli I may be able to achieve my goals hopefully.  The reason I am going to try Alli is because I have been working out a couple of months 4 to 5 times a week and don't see the scale moving.  I use the elliptical machine, weight training machines, and swim, I might be working too much of the weight training, but not sure, I just want to see the weight go down.  Please let me know what I could expect with IBS-D and using Alli, or if I should take it at all with IBS-D.  Also, I am glad to meet everyone on here, and look forward to making friends.  My starting weight is around 262.

Re: Newbie with Irritable Bowel Syndrom -D

    Hi Debbieluv,

    Welcome to alli!

Regarding your IBS and alli, I would recommend you post your question to our online pharmacist to get the most accurate information and to be sure you are doing the right thing. Treatment effects don't necessarily have to even occur with you, and can be avoided or reduced by just being sure to stay within your allotted fat grams per meal and taking the pills as directed.

Your workout regime sounds good - a great mix of cardio and strength training.  You should be aiming for at least three cardio sessions of 30-6- min. each per week (be sure to challenge yourself and keep your heart rate elevated) and two total body weight training sessions per week.  Check out the recommended exercises on this site for ideas and demos.  You should aim for three sets of each exercise, 12-15 reps each set.  Be sure to use a weight that is challenging and difficult to complete the last few reps of your last set.

I'm sure you'll find success.  Let me know if you have any questions regarding your routine specifically - I'm happy to help.

    Good Luck,

    Paul

Re: Newbie with Irritable Bowel Syndrom -D

     Debby,

I'm speaking only of my experience... but my symptoms of IBS-D dramatically improved when I started Alli. I attribute it to the correct way of eating. While I had IBS-D, I didn't stay clear a of few trigger foods. Every day, I'd be in the bathroom, on the floor for a couple hours... wishing it would get better.

I ended up cutting out any fried foods, no fast food, no cream, no mayo, no butter, no soda...  This was gradual, and one day I went to eat out with my parents, and they were like "Where are you 10 immodiums you are going to take". Then I realized, I hadn't taken them for a long time.

I also attribute the improvement of symptoms to daily exercise leading to stress relief... I know at least with me, stress would trigger IBS-D symptoms in me.

Finally, let the pharmacist answer the question about mixing Alli w/ Immodium. But I never did. And when I did experience the Oily Discharge it wasn't bad at all.. It was like a walk in the park compared to my IBS-D symptoms! You don't really want to take immodium to bind ya, when you are trying to let that oily discharge go...

I also know this has been discussed on the board a number of times, so maybe a search will also help you out.

    Good Luck!

    Mich

Re: Newbie with Irritable Bowel Syndrom -D

    Hi DebbyLuv,

I too have IBS-D and since starting the alli plan, it has calmed down ALOT. Before, there would be days I was running to the bathroom 4-5 times. Now, I usually go only once (which is very nice). I also think it has to do with eating healthier and taking the multi-vitamin. I think the vitamin acts like a binder all of its own. I started the diet on June 9th and started taking the pills on June 15th and have already lost 6 pounds! Totally loving this stuff!! Not only is it helping me lose weight, it has gotten my IBS under control...

    Good Luck!

    Mere

    Hi Everyone,

It's great to hear that by changing your diet you've been able to help your IBS.  Hearing from others that it is possible can be so helpful and motivating.

    Thanks for sharing.
