    Carbohydrates

I have only been on the Alli Plan for four days and took my first pills today - actually two, I missed lunch.  I am posting everything I eat in my log and am not getting enough carbohydrates.  Can you give me some suggestions of foods that are high in carbs and low in calories & fat?

    Re: Carbohydrates

Glad to hear you're using the Nutrition Log.  It's a great resource for keeping track of lots more than calories and fat.

In any event, sweet potatoes (loaded with beta-carotene!); whole-grains (breads, cereals), lima beans, corn-on-the-cob, and acorn squash (great as a chilled soup!) are good ways to build in healthy carbs.  A slice of bread with breakfast, a second ear of corn at dinner; the squash soup and whole-grain roll for lunch could all help boast your carbs.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

    Re: Carbohydrates

Thank you.  I have been trying to get my carbs up but have been eating bad carbs like biscuits, hot dog roll, vanilla wafers w/peanut butter, pinto beans, and baked potato; however I have not been going over my calories nor fat.  I still have not met my carb goal either but will work on it.  Will bad carbs sabatoge my weight loss?

I really do not want to get discouraged because I need to stick to this program and get about 110 pounds off!

    Thank you again,

    Carolyn

    Re: Carbohydrates

Good, don't get discouraged.  This is like learning any new activity - driving a car, riding a bike, learning new software, etc. - in the beginning it's frustrating and then it becomes second nature.  You'll get the hang of it.

The refined carbs are not the best because they're often part of foods that are also high in sodium, sugar and fat!  In addition, they tend to raise blood sugar rapidly, then it drops, then people fell tired and hungry and start the cycle all over again.  There is some evidence that foods with a high glycemic index - like white bread, white potatoes, etc. - contributes to ovesity because it calls up too much insulin -- and then the insulin doesn't work properly so extra calories are stored rather than utilized.

Try to get more of those I suggested.  It may not happen overnight but if you can have one less hot dog roll and one slice of whole grain bread instead, you'll be off to a good start.

I hope this helps.  Please let me know if you need anything else.
