Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

Another daily update!  More medals.  Loved the women's beach volleyball gold.

As of 8/21, 7:54 AM ET, the USA has 27 gold, 30 silver and 28 bronze.  Way to go USA.

Our miles are building.  Today's new challenge miles: 49 MILES (and more to come).  WooHoo.  Has anybody worn out their shoes yet?  Hope not.

Bee's personal tally:  Add 3 1/2 for yesterday.  That takes me to 35 3/4.

I think we are all doing great.  I'm having fun trying to catch up with the US team.   Thanks for sharing the experience with me.

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

    Hi, All,

Have not walked yet today, but plan to go 4 miles this pm- that will bring my total to 21 miles (on 8/21 ! - is that a sign of some kind?).  Tomorrow's my birthday (I'd be tempted to go only 1 mile to bring my total to 22 miles on 8/22, but that sort of defeats the purpose of this challenge), so, I'm sure I'll go another 4 miles...

I'm impressed with everyones' efforts- walking 3 miles in the rain?? You're really inspiring me...thanks!

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

Good morning.  I added up the recent reports from the group.  Together Susan, Beth, Lisa, Ed, Pam and Bee have walked a total of 192.5 miles.  We have a good team here as well as in Beijing.

More medals have come in. As of 8/22 at 7:30 ET, the USA has 30 Gold, 35 Silver, and 35 Bronze.

That brings the total challenge so for to : 56.25 MILES.  Another big jump.  Team USA is certainly providing a challenge.

Bee's personal tally:  I did as much walking as I could for a work day.  Adding 5.75 to my total takes me to 41.5 miles.

    Keep on keeping on

    Bee

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

Good morning to you! Wow- you did almost 6 miles? That's fantastic. You'll have no problem reaching the goal.

Did you see the mens and women's track event last night (relay race)- the US team was all fumble fingers- couldn't hang on to the baton for anything! I was really shocked...

My total as of today (my birthday by the way) is 21 miles (I think- I forgot to check back on my previous total). I've also lost 7 lbs. to date since 8/2 or so (that's a nice b-day present to myself!). ONLY 35+ miles to go by 9/1!!! If I go 4 miles per day between 8/23 and 8/31, that will be 32 miles. I can squeeze a couple extras in here and there I'm sure (assuming we get no more medals, of course). Piece of cake (Oops! Don't want to think about cake, even on my birthday!).

    Until next time....

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

     Happy Birthday Beth!!!

Yes, I did watch the Olympic track events last night and couldn't believe both the men and womens US teams dropped the baton.

I did another 3.19 miles last night and another 1.59 this morning...bringing me to 62.1  and I dropped down to 221.5 lbs. (started the diet at 243 about 7 weeks ago.).

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

     Thanks, Ed!

You're doing great! Keep it up!

Just a correction to my mile total:  I'm up to 25 miles (not 21)- even better b-day present!

Just a quick question (for anyone): If you were me and were going to be eating out for both lunch and dinner today and not sure where you were going, would you try to figure out the calories/fat content or the exchanges for each meal after the fact, or would you just wing it and try to pick low cal, low fat items?

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

Good morning everyone.  Happy belated birthday, Beth.  It's probably too late, but if I didn't know the destination, I'd make the healthiest choice I could from the menu and watch the portion size.  Later I might try to put it in the nutrition log, but as it was a special day you could just enter "eating out" at move on.

As of 8/23, 8:04 AM ET, the USA has 31 gold, 36 Silver and 36 Bronze.

That brings us up to 58 CHALLENGE MILES SO FAR.

Bee's own tally:  I added 4.5 miles yesterday, so I'm now up to 46 miles.  There were fewer US medals yesterday, so I caught up a little bit.  I plan to go out for another walk soon.

    Take care everyone,

    Bee

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

Thank you for your birthday wishes, Everyone! I had a really nice day and stuck to the program w/no problem- I got to choose both restaurants- both were chains and had their nutrition info on their websites. For lunch we ended up in the food court at the mall b/c my little great nephews were with us and it was easier. I chose La Salsa and ordered what I thought would be the lowest cal/fat item- soft taco w/steak and black beans. I ordered 2 tacos, but only ate one- thank goodness b/c each taco has 15 gm. fat (I found out later). I took the other one home and ate it for lunch today. For dinner, I planned my meal ahead of time. I picked the restaurant (Red Lobster) and planned my entire meal to fit the remainder of cal/fat I had left on my nutrition log. I included a glass of wine in that (red, figuring its healthier). I found out they have a "Light House" menu. I ordered grilled tilapia, salad w/fat free dressing, baked potato dry, and avoided the wonderful cheddar biscuits like the plague, but I enjoyed my dinner thoroughly, did not worry about anything, and did not feel deprived in any way (or hungry)- I actually couldn't finish it! We were able to enjoy an evening with friends. It was lovely.

Anyway, walked 4 miles again today- My total is 29 miles. Hope I can catch up!

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

I've enjoyed doing the medal updates.  It makes me feel more connected to the Games.  But somedays I have mixed feelings when the medal counts jump way more than I can possibly walk.  The athletes did an amazing job.  I've been trying really, really hard to get my miles up.  After all, I started this crazy thing, and I'd like to finish it!

Here's the latest from msn.com:  As of 8/24, 5:14 AM ET the USA has 36 Gold, 38 Silver, and 36 Bronze.  Yup, that's 110 medals total for the USA.  As far as I know that number will stand, but one never knows when a disqualification or such will change the medal count (hopefully in the USA's favor :)).  I'll keep an eye out for changes.

So, our Medal Challenge total is now: 64 MILES for a GOLD medal finish!

48 MILES for a SILVER medal finish (75%)

32 MILES for a BRONZE medal finish (50%)

Bee's personal tally: I added 4 1/2 miles, so I'm up to 50.5 miles.  I'm still aiming for Gold and I think I can do it.

Everyone is doing so well.  Keep having fun out there!

    Bee
