Had back surgery, does physical therapy count?

     Hi,

I had back surgery the end of May this year. To be more specific I had a disc fusion, L4 & L5 and a lamonectomy, S1. I had physical therapy at home after the first 4 weeks. Now I have started aquatic therapy 2x a week about an hour a session and one day of land pt @ about an hour and a half a session. Right now this is all I am able to do, doctor's orders. Is this burning calories? On the land pt I do stretches then about 45 min. of strength training using 10# weights right now. They have started me off slowly, I have screws and rods in my back from the fusion so I guess this is what I'm supposed to be doing.

I was just wondering if this a form of exercising and am I burning calories?

Re: Had back surgery, does physical therapy count?

    Hi jamiti,

Thanks for writing and welcome to the ali fitness forum.  I am sorry to hear that you've had such a difficult surgery, but am very glad to hear that you've come through it successfully!

To address your question, our bodies are continually burning calories all throughout the day, even at rest.  The amount of calories that you are burning varies with the amount of activity that you're doing (rest vs. activity), as well as other physiological factors, such as metabolism, your height, weight, and current fitness level.  It sounds as if you're doing all that you can do exercise-wise!  Working out 45 minutes to an hour+ per session is definitely burning a good amount of calories and is strengthening and enabling your back for a full recovery.

Stay the course and take it day by day!  Give your body the time for a full recovery so that you can increase the amount and intensity of your workouts when you are healthy!

With the help of alli, a healthy, low-fat diet and your PT, you should still see positive results!

    Your friend in fitness,

    Kelli

Re: Had foot surgery and taking care of elderly parent, does physical therapy count?

    Hi Candyjane,

I am sorry to hear that you've had so many set backs.  I would encourage you to stick to your healthy eating plan, and with alli.  Unless you have medical reasons to discontinue taking alli, I would do my best to stick with the program, and take it day by day!

Although you may not be able to be as physically active, follow the low-fat, nutrient dense eating plan to promote health and wellness, promoting a full-recovery.

    Best of health,

    Kelli
