Re: Elia, Linda, Lizzy, Patty, Kimberley, Buzz, Judy, Where Are You?

Hey, what's all of this talk about a yogurt diet and food that helps you lose weight? Did you guys forget that your favorite dietitian is here to answer all questions-that's me in case you forgot ;o) When you really, really need a jump start with your weight loss I recommend meal replacement shakes and/or bars with at least one meal. You will miss out on nutrients by only having one food type. You can use yogurt with fresh fruit as one of your meals. If you find that you are getting hungry I recommend having at least 14 grams of protein in your meal. Yogurt tends to only have 7 so you'll need to add something or save it for a snack. I'd love to say that those foods will help you lose weight, but they won't without the calorie restriction and the right balance from the rest of your meals.

Is there anything that I can do for any of your diets?

Remember, I am always just a keyboard away :o)

Re: Elia, Linda, Lizzy, Patty, Kimberley, Buzz, Judy, Where Are You?

Ha ha Betty, I haven't forgotten my favorite dietitian, (or is it dietician?) even for a second.  The yogurt thing was a flash in the pan, didn't do it.  I eat yogurt every morning with berries, any kind that's available, plus 1/3 of a canteloupe (cut up in chunks) and a medium banana.  Oh yeah, and a "Good Belly" probiotic drink (50 calories), but no protein, so maybe I should add a hard boiled egg (eww) or a chunk of cheese.  I promise I will remember the protein part, because I'm a slacker there, I often have a salad and baked potato for dinner, no protein, so I'll add some cheese.  I really do eat very healthy food, last night I cooked up cut-up eggplant, zucchini, fresh tomatoes, okra and green beans and ate it with some brown rice, (again no protein).  My problem is I'm a sucker for carbohydrates, so I must work on that.  And oh yeah, stay out of restaurants, no will power there.  Thanks for continuing to check on us, always good to know you are here, very comforting.

Elia, if you don't check in here by Friday I am going to call you, getting worried about you.  I hope everyone is having a good day, I am so far.

    Love, Judy

Re: Elia, Linda, Lizzy, Patty, Kimberley, Buzz, Judy, Where Are You?

    Hi Judy,

When you aren't raised to eat this way it takes time to get used to it. The good part about this is that you will notice the difference when you do have more protein in your meals and it will get easier to remember to have it when you pay attention to that. I don't recommend relying on cheese to be your source of protein in all of your meals or even every day.  I also don't recommend adding anything that you say "eww" about :o) It sounds like you are avoiding meat and seafood. Is that true? If so, check out this article that I wrote on vegetarian diets http://www.medicinenet.com/vegetarian_and_vegan_diet/article.htm. I included a section that lists the protein contents of high protein foods.

I also recommend that you shift to higher fiber starches and fruits. The fiber is better for your health, will help fill you up, and doesn't give you the spike in blood sugars the same way that white flour does. Here is a good resource on the fiber content in some common foods http://huhs.harvard.edu/assets/File/OurServices/Service_Nutrition_Fiber.pdf.

And finally, it is spelled dietitian.

    How's all of that?

Re: Elia, Linda, Lizzy, Patty, Kimberley, Buzz, Judy, Where Are You?

     hello betty

I to am a carb person,i was starting to eat all carbs for my snacks and have been switching to yougurt, puddings and fruits( i really have to force my self  on the fruits.) i have a half glass of oj every morning with my egg beaters or my oatmeal. Then i would really like to get my fruit by eating apple pie or turnovers,  LOL but have been eating a plain apple or a baked apple with sugar and cinnamon.also got some pears and bananas.i buy the fruit and veggies and half the time dont eat them,so i really need to push them into my meal plans.but i love frozen artchokes and mix them with pasta and chicken sausage. also i  always buy red peppers and avocadoes.now that the growing season is over here no more fresh tomatoes and cukes, the store bought ones have no flavor. i did pick up a european cucomber today, they usually are ok.

So far since aug im down 6 pounds so am really focused on the weight loss again. Thanks for the info an for checking in on us.

Re: Elia, Linda, Lizzy, Patty, Kimberley, Buzz, Judy, Where Are You?

Linda, congratulations on the six pounds, you go, girl!  How are you doing after cutting down on the carbs for awhile?  Have you somewhat lost your craving?  I'm having a tough time with the carbs and since I also need to watch my cholesterol if I want to stay off the meds I have to keep it low at the same time.  I see that is sort of what the South Beach diet is.  Betty, thanks for the website referrals.  I looked at both, but now need to really study them so the information stays in my mind!  Linda, I know you and I are both artichoke lovers, and I love your idea of buying the frozen hearts and then put them in salads and pasta dishes, not much work and tasty.

After worrying about Elia all week, I called her this morning.  She is okay!  I told her the last we heard she was saying she was very tired and thought she might have to see a doctor.  Of course she hasn't seen the doctor yet, but she has been running herself ragged with taking care of her mom and increased duties at work.  She will be back on line soon and give us an update.  She said she is just taking it easy today, so that's good.  I hope all of you are doing the same and will be back on the board this week to check in.  I behaved half of the weekend and misbehaved half, so I hope that evens itself out.  Friday night I partied with the daughters and had three screwdrivers.  Linda, I figured that way I would get my orange juice, right?  Today has been a good day so far.

    Love, Judy

Re: Elia, Linda, Lizzy, Patty, Kimberley, Buzz, Judy, Where Are You?

Linda, you do push yourself, don't you?  And you get an A for effort, but  I'm giving you the same advice I gave Elia, take care of yourself!  Crawl in that bed when you snuggle up, and go to sleep, best care.  I hope the snow isn't a sign of more to come, at least for awhile.  Well, it's Monday and IT WILL be a good day for everyone!  (And by the way, where is everyone?)

Re: Elia, Linda, Lizzy, Patty, Kimberley, Buzz, Judy, Where Are You?

Hi girls,  I am just checking in.  The boards are so quiet without Elia.  We must carry on ...........until she is back with us.  I am doing OK....I have had a few bad days but have stayed the same.  I am working 6 days a week now.  I will only do that until the move which is set for Nov 11.  With 3 kids in college, 2 house payments and me without a job when I get to UT, I better work while I can.  Last night they had a going away party for me and another girl that left last week.  It was lots of pizza and sweets.  I would love to tell you that I did fine but I didn't.  I ate 2 cheesy bread and 2 pieces of Pepperoni pizza with 2 choc chip cookies for dessert.  I didn't even taste that good.  I was pretty mad at myself.  Today is a brand new day...thank goodness.

Linda.........where do you live?  We had a couple of inches of snow about 2 weeks ago.  It only lasted a day.  It has been unseasonally cold for this time of year in IA.

    Keep posting everyone, Lynn

Re: Elia, Linda, Lizzy, Patty, Kimberley, Buzz, Judy, Where Are You?

Hello everyone! Hey u all, I check in and you all go missing? Doing much better. I do hope that you are all having a great Sunday! Betty please!!!!!!!!! I know I could probably find this but I need some quick answers from a trusted source and friend. I need to know which fruits are lowest in sugar and recommended for diabetics.  My mom loves fruits and sweets, I figure sweets are out for now, but fruits are healthy, so I will go with the lesser of two evils! Some advice from any and all of you would be greatly appreciated! I am going nuts with mom's eating plan! And yes, I do have a perscription to take her to some eating for diabetics thing, but when can I go?? Saturdays and Sundays are my only my days, and they do not give me that option! I do have to check it out though! Love you all,

    Elia

Re: Elia, Linda, Lizzy, Patty, Kimberley, Buzz, Judy, Where Are You?

Hey Skinny Bones Jones!  That would be Elia.  Maybe the rest of you too, but I know Elia has to be Skinny Bones at 129.  Congratulations on winning the challenge with Tricia.  Tricia, I'm sure you are right behind her, (what behind there still is).  I'm off on a new diet venture.  This time it's South Beach.  I'm trying it because I know my addiction is to carbohydrates, and this plan helps you break the craving/addiction.  I chose it because I not only need to lower my carbs, but also need to lower my cholesterol or I'll end up back on medication.  I'm only on my second day, so nothing to get excited about yet, but the good news is one of my daughters is on it with me.  She is on more of the Atkins type because she just wants to break the carb addiction and lose about 20 pounds.  That would be Renee', the one with the two kids.  Lisa, the worst influence of the two, isn't interested, even though she was recently told she has high cholesterol.  Ah, the young!  The three of us each need to lose about 20 pounds.  You know, that really isn't a lot, and it shouldn't be so darned hard to do, but it is.  I bought the book and that really helps motivate me.  It has lots of recipes and menu plans in it.  Sometimes you just need something new, you know?  Elia, it might be a good idea to buy some sort of diabetes book for your mom.  When I was at the book store I saw lots of books with diets for diabetics.  I think those diets are very healthy overall.  Elia, Brenna is much better, and thank you for asking.  She has been out of school for two weeks now and still sleeps about 10 to 12 hours a night and takes a long nap during the day, but her glands aren't swollen anymore and she looks and feels much better.  She has a checkup scheduled for tomorrow, so then we'll know more about when she can go back to school.  She is going to quit her job, so that should help.  Elia, I was happy to see that corporate did compromise and you only have to go there one day a week.  That is so much better than three.  Where is everybody else?  I haven't checked any of the other threads so maybe everybody is posting there.  That "Over 50s" one is just too hard to find, so I hardly ever go there.  I need to track it down and bookmark it like I did with the message board.  I miss the old format where all the threads were posted on one page, along with the recipes and everything.  So far I haven't approved of the changes they've made to this board, but oh well, I will definitely keep coming back, I don't know what I would do without you guys.  I hope you're all have a great weekend.  I am!

    Love, Judy

Re: Elia, Linda, Lizzy, Patty, Kimberley, Buzz, Judy, Where Are You?

Hi everyone, yes Elia did beat me, and still is ahead, but I finally broke those 130's and weighed in this morning with 129 exactly.  Elia weighed in at 128.5, I think that was what she did.  Anyway, she was 128 something, so, she is still ahead of me, but I promised her I would be on her toes, and I am.  Hi Elia!!!  LOL  Anyway, just thought I would share my excitement, and tell everyone that I have the best friend helping me along!  Love ya Elia!!!

As long as you try, you will be successful.
