I'm not overweight but. . .I want to use Alli. What will happen if I used it?

     Hi There,

I am 5"10 and weigh about 165lbs.  I would like to lose about 10 to 15lbs.  I took a look at the guide and noticed that I don't weigh enough to take Alli.  Although it is not recommended, I would like to know if I could still loose weight by taking it?  What will happen and are there any health risks?

    Thanks!

If you're in your ideal weight and only wanna loose 5 or 10 lbs why not just make an effort to walk or jog a little more or watch your diet?  Why start the program?  Why waste the 50 bucks if you dont need it?

    Hi DiamondCrest,

Alli is indicated for use as a weight loss aid  for over weight adults, with a BMI of 24.9 or higher.  You will not get any benefits using alli if you are not overweight being that there is not enough body fat.

Also understand that the alli program in not just about the numbers on the scale, but about being healthy.  Good eating and exercise is the basis of the program.

    Hope this helps.

I'm 5'11" and was 165lbs.  For the life of me I don't see why you would want to go on alli.   165 is a good weight to begin with.  If you want to loose weight just watch what you eat.  Write it down and you'll see that you've eaten more than enough for one person.   Go out for long walks, jog, etc.  I would never consider taking alli or any diet aid for that matter if i was still 165lbs.

Re: I'm not overweight but. . .I want to use Alli. What will happen if I used it?

    Hi,

Actually, I exercise about 3 to 4 times a week, and I have changed my eating habits to include more whole wheat products and less sugar intake.  So . . .I am doing something to improve my lifestyle.

From my understanding, Alli is supposed to help people who are dieting.  Although I have a healthy weight- I did not know whether or not I could benefit from Alli.

    Thanks for responding!

     Hi There,

I am making an effort to lose weight.  I have changed my eating habits to include more vegetables, whole wheat products and less sugar intake.  I also exercise 3 to 4 times a week.

I wanted to know, what would happen to me (as a person with a healthy weight) if I took Alli.  It's suppose to help those who are dieting block additional fat.  I was curious if it could work for me.

    I think it's a valid question/concern.

    Thanks for responding!

     Hi,

Hmmm. . . . so for people who have used Alli and have reached their goals and BMI's are below 24.9; should they stop using the product?

I am a little confused.  If I take Alli (as a person with a healthy weight) it won't work for me?   I have changed my eating habits to include more vegetables, less fat, whole productions and less sugar intake; but I still want to look and be healthier.  I know All is not recommended; but  . . .are their any health risks that I should be aware of?

    Thanks for your feedback!

Re: I'm not overweight but. . .I want to use Alli. What will happen if I used it?

    Hi DiamondCrest,

In order to lose weight one must create a caloric deficit, either through a reduction of calories, increase in burning off the calories and yes the combination of the two.  Alli helps create this deficit by blocking the absorption of fat (a 60mg dose will block about 25% of the fat consumed) and the body starts to use up stored fat for energy.

At a healthy weight there normally is not enough body fat to make use of this product feasible.

It is always beneficial to change our eating habits and to include exercise, even at healthy weights.  The inclusion of whole grain products, fruits and vegetables is the way to go.  You may need to monitor your carbohydrate intake.

    Hope this clarifies.

Doesn't this depend on more than just weight though? Two people can be the same gender, same height, same weight and one has much more fat than the other. One can be overweight at the same weight that the other is a healthy weight.

Some people are naturally more or less muscular, or have bigger or smaller bone structure. BMI is not the whole story and for some people it may show them to be in an incorrect category.

A measure of your body fat percentage is more accurate. For women a healthy body fat is 20-25 and for men 15-18% (athletes will usually have less). I would think if your body fat percentage was above this range alli would help (according to what Sophia said) even if your BMI showed as being on target. There are lots of ways to get your body fat tested and someone in the healthy BMI range may want to do that to see is their body fat is also in the healthy range.

    Make sense? HTH!

Re: I'm not overweight but. . .I want to use Alli. What will happen if I used it?

     Hi,

I'm 5'2" and was 153 pounds 3 months ago. Today I weighed in at 141. I checked my BMI and found that I'm now in the healthy range. I will continue to use alli until I reach my interim goal of 135 poinds. After taking stock of my situation, if I decide it's reasonable to get a bit lower, maybe 129 (I was 114-118 lbs in my 20's and in my 30's after a gain and loss, 124-127 lbs) I will continue to use alli. The plan itself I will keep up with after I stop taking the pills because it really works. I am amazed at the support. There are even great rewards they give!

That's my situation, maybe it can help you decide what to do in yours.

    Hi E,

You do make an excellent point.  The BMI chart though is the easiest measure even with its flaws, it usually errs in the reverse.  Muscular people may have high BMIs since muscle weighs more than fat and a BMI is a height/weight chart.

Waist to hip ratio, or just your waist size is a good indicator, for women it should be less than 32 inches and men less than 35 inches.  In all honestly, we know when we have excess fat.

How true! When you bend over and have feel a roll of smushy in the middle, that's fat. When you put on your pants and you spill over (muffin top style), that's fat.

The great thing is I have less of it every day!

     LOL, E!

And muscle isn't lumpy either. I'm to the point where I can see there's muscle under the lumpy layer and it encourages me to keep with the plan.
