    Question about Spinning Classes

I've considered trying a spinning class, mostly because it's offered at a time that I can get to the gym.  I've seen instructions to bring a "gel seat."  Can I buy one at any sporting goods store and approximately what do they cost?  Are there any tips about what I'd be looking for when I buy a gel seat?  Thanks. - Jane

Re: Question about Spinning Classes - Attn: Kelli

Kelli - No, I didn't get an answer.  Someone said they bought a gel seat at Target maybe it wasn't a good one and they don't use it aniymore.  I didn't get any suggestions about what would be good to buy or how to look for one.  If you have some suggestions on this, I'd appreciate it. - Jane

Re: Question about Spinning Classes - Attn: Kelli

I saw them again at Target for 16.97, but honestly, you are standing a good deal of the time, straight up, over the seat, and with your rear end pushed to the back over the seat.  But that is up to you.  You could try a bike shop or sports equipment store like Sports Authority also.  They arent expensive, so you might want to just give it a try and see.

I did get spinning shoes, with the SPD cleat that clips onto the pedal.  I think I get a better workout, because I feel more stable, less wobbly, and I am able to push down, and pull up with me knees with me feet actually attached to the pedals.  My legs and rear end are really getting toned.  A guy at the gym just commented on that, YAY.  The shoes are a little pricey, entry level shoes are around $70-$80 and you have to buy the cleat separate and have it attached, so thats another $30-$40.  But I am glad I got them.  I am excited to go to class and clip in now :  )

    Re: Question about Spinning Classes

I was going to the spin class and loved it, I never bought the gel seat. It is true that at the begining my butt was so sore I could not sit for a few days, lol, but I got used to it and it never hurt again. I never bought cleats or special shoes. I just showed up with my towel, water bottle, a good heart-rate monitor watch and a positive attitude. I would burn approximately 700 calories or so per hour. The class got so popular and so good that it started to get too crowded and I hardly found a bike available. Plus my interest in cycling grew and took me to the road.

Both my husband and I bought road bikes, helmets, gloves and cycling shoes and take to the road a few times a week. I started slow and short trips, now we bike 20-mile trips twice a week, at about 1100 calories. I love it, it is different than the spin class, but if you cant do the road bike, stick to the spin class, it is a lot of hard work but it is a blast. Try to stick to it at least 3 times a week rain or shine. Good luck, and let me know how it went. Kiss

Re: Question about Spinning Classes - Attn: Kelli

    Hi judiwright,

Thanks for the good info.  The gel seats aren't typically very expensive and can be found in most sporting goods stores.

I agree that the spinning shoes and clips are worth the investment.  By stabilizing your feet, your legs do get a better workout as they're able to pull up and push down.

Keep up the great work and best of luck to you!
