    adapt an activity plan

     Hello,

I am recovering from major surgery on my shoulder.  Previously  ( 10 days ago) I had been on the Alli program, working out in a gym using weights and elyptical trainer, for the past 10 months. Using Alli for 5 +weeks.

I'm at the point now that I don't return to my surgeon for 2 1/2 weeks, am not supposed to lift with my right arm, must keep it in a sling and am not supposed to drive. I do walk around my neighborhood  but not very rapidly; still on some pain pills.

Daily challenges also include food prep and staying on the program to include good fats, and enough fiber.

I'm wriiting because I'm gaining weight, and need some advice on how to start an activity plan without damaging the surgical site.  No PT until after I return to my DR.

    Can you please help.

    Barb

    Re: adapt an activity plan

    Hi rhubarb7,

Thanks for writing.  I am sorry to hear about your surgery and know that it can certainly feel like a set-back. It is great that you've been regularly working out for the last 10 months as that will only benefit you in your recovery and also getting back to your normal workout routine!

Although you do not return to your Dr. for a couple of weeks, there are ways to get in some activity. Even though you cannot perform your typical workout, walking around your neighborhood is a great start!  If you're up to it, try to do that a couple of times per day.  If you have access to the gym, stationary biking is a terrific workout and shouldn't irritate your surgery site.  Utilizing a FitBall would also be beneficial.  You can perform strength training exercises, such as bicep curls (with one arm!), let extensions and some core exercises while sitting on it.  Another idea would be to perform ST exercises while sitting in a chair.  If appropriate, get in a pool and perform leg exercises! Go to "myactivity" and click on "strength training log" to view animated demos for a full-body workout. You can pick and choose the ones that are appropriate for you!

It may be difficult to not be able to get in as much exercise or the type of exercise that you're used to, but realize that it is only temporary.  Again the fact that you've been working out consistently for a long time, you'll bounce right back.

If you have questions re: your dietary intake, please post a message to the on-line dietician to best be served.

    Best in health,

    Kelli
