What type of food should I eat at Mexican Restaurants?

Hi!  I love Mexican.  I have been limiting it for the past 4 months, but just wondering what is good to eat there when i do go?  I've been having a chicken soft taco with rice, but I'm not sure how bad this is for me.  Any other Mexican food addicts out there?

Re: What type of food should I eat at Mexican Restaurants?

     one mexican food addict here!!

(wow, it's been a long time since i've posted. although i read almost daily.)

it is my favorite type of food...the one type i could never give up. i'm not completely sure what are the better choices to make when eating mexican food, but i know if you'll stick to something grilled and all the vege's you want you should be alright. avoid the unlimited chips and salsa basket, ground beef and anything fried.

when i go, i usually get chicken fajitas. chicken and grilled peppers and onions, lettuce, tomato and salsa. i definitely limit the cheese and sour cream. although i do have a little. (keeping in mind, i don't take alli right now. i am beginning on thursday 10/30/08....second attempt.)

i can skip the tortilla because they aren't my favorite. i'd rather save my fat and calories for a little cheese and sour cream.

one chicken soft taco and rice isn't a horrible choice, i would guess. definitely check calorieking.com for more complete nutrition information. also, sometimes specific restaurants will have their nutrition information online. that really comes in handy for me.

    maybe this will help.

    :-)

Re: What type of food should I eat at Mexican Restaurants?

I agree, chicken is your best bet here. I love avacado so I get that instead of cheese or sour cream. I have heard if you eat tortillias then corn is better that flour. I love the chicken fajita salad with no cheese, but avacado and instead of dressing I put salsa. I love chips and salsa, but I know they are usually big and bad. I allow myself up to four and eat them slowly. Usually by this time the food arrives. I try to check out the nutrional info on the website of the resturaunt. I know if I dont eat a little I feel sad when I go home so I let myself splurge just a little, but I know in my head if I gain or dont lose then I cant beat myself up. I dont take my pill just because I know I dont want to run to the bathroom during dinner. I dont trust the cooks completly because you never know what they use to cook with. Rice and grilled veggies are good, but I know they use oil on most of them so I eat them , but only about half.

    Best wishes,

    Erica

    Hi Jskdean76,

You are doing the right thing trying to decide ahead of time what you will order. Here is the nutrition information for many Mexican dishes http://www.calorieking.com/calories-in-mexican.html.

Re: What type of food should I eat at Mexican Restaurants?

Thanks for asking that because I just started this program and I just love Mexican food! I will say I'm going to Olive Garden tonight and I got online to view their menu choices and review the calorie and fat content so that I could decide now, before I get there, what it is I want. That should help to keep me in line. Also, I'm going to have them wrap half of it up ahead of time so that I'm not tempted to eat the whole thing.

That is a great tip to have them wrap up half in the start of the meal! I havent thought of that. Plus you get the joy of having the other half the next day! Win win.

    Thanks for the tip,
