I want Chinese food! What's a good choice item?

FI and I want to go out for Chinese food tonight, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

I'd like to order some shrimp egg foo young or shrimp fried rice. Is this a good choice?

Oh I love Chinese food! I have wanted to go get some, but afraid what will happen. I might try getting steamed rice, and maybe one of the soups. I had heard that if you get the steamed dumplings with chicken and steamed rice, it should be low fat. I love PF Changs, but havent dared gone yet since starting. I know they have the info on their website. Thanks for posting, I am so glad I am not the only one.

    Good luck,

    Hi all!

Although Chinese Food can truly wreck your diet, there are some great choices, too.  Do go for the steamed brown rice, and always ask the waiter about cutting out msg and going light on the oil.  Do your best to stay away from dishes that include cashews, and other "extras"....

Do best answer your question about dietary intake, post a question to the On-line dietician on the "ask a specialist" forum.

    Best in health!

I get the white rice rather then fried.  No crispy noodles in my hot and sour soup.  I go for dishes with a lot of veggies and most important, I only eat half of what they bring me.  I immediately set aside 1/2 of the dish and bring it home for another meal.

Do that at all the restaurants now.  The server brings out the dish and I go "Gosh, there is no way I can eat all that, can I have a to-go box?"  I get them to bring that out right away.  If the food isn't on my dish I'm not tempted to overeat.

    Hi blueiscool,

Thanks for the great ideas and suggestions.  They are very helpful!

Most individuals who have consistently gained weight over time are victims of overeating.  Portion size is truly on of the best and effective ways to maintain/lose weight, even when you're not eating the healthiest of fares!

When served a large platter or dish, half the plate right away and go ahead and place 1/2 of it in the take-home container.  Eat slowly and drink your water in-between bites, too to ensure your stomach has time to 'feel" full!

Best of luck and in health,

    Kelli

And servers will work with you. I was someplace and the only sides they had were fried or full of mayo.  Since they were putting a tomato on my sandwich I told her to just slice up another tomato as my side dish. For me it was learning how to ask and negotiate at a restuarant.

    Hi blueiscool,

You are right.  It is just a matter of asking. The servers and the restaurant should more than happy to accommodate you.  Be sure to also ask what is used to cook the dish, how it is served, and if there are alternative ways to prepare that dish.

Keep up the great work and stay committed to it!
