Hi, Im new here and could use some help..

Hi, my name is Kellie and I am 31 years old.  I am 5'7" and weigh 234 pounds.  I havent alwasy been this big and am ready to get my life back and enjoy it to its fullest for myself and my 2 year old son.  After contemplating Alli for 6 months; I decided that Ive tried every other diet plan in the world and nothing has worked, except Ephedra which is now banned; and this is my last shot at weight loss.  I read the literature and began last friday 10/30/09.  I set my target at 15 g of fat per meal and 1400 calories per day to start. Im having a very very hard time reaching the fat gram target.  Ive not had any treatment effects; so in my mind Im thinking that its already not working.  I eat low fat as it is.  For example; Subway is a typical lunch (turkey and cheese on wheat); special k breakfast bar for breakfast and dinner is usually my free for all.  Im a late night snacker too.  I really want to succeed and my mindset is at the right place and I feel like this is the right time for me to take control back of my life.  But I have little to no support here and dont know where to start or if Im starting the right way.

If anyone here can help give me some pointers as to how to begin correctly and how to get the right fat per meal and achieve weight loss; i would truely appreciate it.  Thank you so much for reading this.

Re: Hi, Im new here and could use some help..

Hi Kellie. From what you wrote it seems as though you should be eating more fat and calories per meal. I am 5'8" and weigh 163 (this is my second week), at the beginning I was 165 and my fat and calories were higher. Make sure you go by the recommended fat and calories per this website, as it is very useful. I also have a hard time fitting in my fat grams and have taken tips from others about adding some butter or peanut butter to whatever I am eating to get my total fat grams per that meal. Cheese will also up the fat grams.

You should NOT experience treatment effects if you are staying within your fat grams-that is a GOOD thing! You don't want to experience the treatment effects, that tells you that you have gone over your fat grams-and it is not a pleasant thing to experience.

Usually for breakfast and lunch I don't hit my fat grams-or even come close. So I don't take an alli with those meals. My breakfast is usually a bowl of raisin bran (keeps thing 'going' for me) with fat free milk-so that is 230 calories and 1 gram of fat. I'm not a big breakfast eater, so this works for me. (My first try with alli last year I tried to eat the big breakfast-couldn't do it-I felt over stuffed and uncomfortable, so the cereal is a good fit for me.) Lunch depends on how busy I am during the day (I'm a stay at home mom, but still very busy!). Usually it's a deli meat sandwich (low fat meat, no cheese) or some veggies with crackers (again, low fat). Dinner is where I really try to get my fat grams in per meal and I do quite well with it. I'll have a meat, veg, and starch/carb and leave enough left over to work in some dessert. If I feel the need to have a snack later on I'll have popcorn in the microwaveable popcorn popper bowl, no butter or salt-thats how I like it.

I recommend getting a food scale-I have one and it helps a lot with getting the accurate measurements. I am not good at eyeballing measurements, I either over or underestimate portion size, so the scale helps me a lot.

Keep reading the posts on the alli website. There are many helpful tips and lots of friendly people. Stick with it and you'll see progress!

Re: Hi, Im new here and could use some help..

Thank you so much for your reply!  I did do an experiment last night tho; trying to see if the pills would work for me.  I completely went way over my fat grams, 27 g in one snack to be exact, to see if I would have any treatment effects.. and nothing happened?!  I keep waiting and waiting but nothing.. do you think these just dont work on me?  One reason for taking them was the fear of the "unknown" side effects.. but if there arent any then that wont stop me from eating what i want when i want.. i know me!

Today for bfast I had 2 scrambled eggs, 1 turkey sausage patty, and one piece wheat toast.. 270 cals and 13.5 fat

For lunch I had a 6" turkey and cheese sub on wheat and bakes bbq chips, sugar free pudding.. 500 cals and 11.5 fat

    Im trying.. i really am..

Re: Hi, Im new here and could use some help..

You may not experience treatment effects right away-it might happen 24 hours later or so. It can come on unexpectedly, so be very careful and aware of how much fat you are consuming!

That is good that you are keeping track of the fat and calories in your meals. Good job!

I find that Alli really keeps me aware of what I eat and how much fat I consume. I don't want the treatment effects. I have enough 'intestinal/bowel' issues as it is and the treatment effects would only add to my dilema, lol.

Keep coming to the boards to post. I know for me it really helps keep me on track when I read how well others are doing. I want to be right along with them with losing weight.

Keep up the great work you are doing!

Re: Hi, Im new here and could use some help..

Hi, my name is Rebekah and I have been on Alli for almost 4 months and have lost 42 pounds.  It has been a journey.  I think what works best for me is to make sure that I eat at my meal times and I give myself a snack in the afternoon (I work until 6 or 7 pm so I need something to keep me going) and anotherr snack in the evening if I want one.  Some of things that I might have for breakfst is instant oatmeal w/ skim milk, raisin toast w/ ricotta cheese, 1 poached egg w/ low fat english muffin.  If I am rally hungry I might add a yogurt or a piece of fruit to go with any of those.  I usually just have the one thing because I am not a big eater when I fist wake up.

For lunch I love the smart ones entries.  They do all the calculating for you and then again I'll add some carrots and celery or fruit or yogurt if I have not had any yet that day. Or i may have a sandwich with chicken or tuna. Subway is good too but I usually save that for dinner if I  want to eat take out.

For dinner it is what ever I want with in the scope of my diet.  I substitute lots of things to make my meals low fat and I measure portions all the time.  For example.  I like pasta so I make my own sauce. Mostly from stuff that I grew in the garden and put up myself.  I brown lean burger and then drain and rinse it before adding it to my sauce and since that is the only thing contributing fat to my sauce by rincing it first I really lower the fat grams.  When it comes time to eat I measure out 1 cup of pasta and 1 cup of sauce and I am good to go.  I do this with almost everything an it seems to work for me.  I use low fat or no fat substitues all the time.

For my snacks I have pretzels, special k crackers, yogurt, fruit, low fat cheese sticks, 94% fat free microwave popcorn ( which my family says tastes like paper but do not have a problem bumming off of me when I eat it ) I like it, Special K bars, well you get the idea.  For my afternoon snack I allow about 250- 280 calories give or take but in the evening I try to stay with in the 125 range which makes the fat free popcorn great because a whole bag is only 105 calories and I never even finish it in one sitting.

You need to rember that you will have your ups and downs.  The last two weigh ins I lost no weight but this week I have started kup again and lost 3 pounds.  I have been able to take off 42 pounds because I have been losing 2-3 pounds a week instead of trying to lose it all at once.  And by changing my eating habits.  I have also tryed other things that took away your appetite and lost the weight but in the end when I am no longer taking whatever it was that supressed my appetite I gained it all back.  What I am doing right now is learning anew way to eat and I actually like what I am doing.  So when I reach my finally goal I ill be able to maintain because I will still be eating the same amd be happy with my choices.

I would suggest setting small goals first.  Start with 1-2 pounds a week.  They all add up.  Then lenghten that.  I am doing 1-2 pounds a week but added that I want to hit a total of 50 pounds by Thanksgiviing.  That may sound like a lot to you but I have already lost 42 so 8 more by Thanksgiving is doable for me at this time.  You might do say 10 pounds by Christmas that gives you ample time to lose at a healthy rate of 1-2 pounds a week with a couple of extra weeks thrown in there.  Any way that is how I do it. But you know if I only hit say 48 pounds by Thanksgiving I'll be happy with that too.

You also want to remember the only way this will work for you is to eat right not neccesarily less you need the good calories to function. And exercise.  the excess fat will come off so much better when you get moving.

Good luck and I hope this helped.

    my start weight was 224

    my current weight is 182

my weekly goal is 1-2 pounds

my first major goal is 160

    my ultimate goal is 145
