    Re: Unusual Periods

    Hi There

I haven't had my period like in 5 month and I started to have it on Aug 1st. It's weird because I've always had problem with my menstruation. I have it like for 6 days and heavy, really heavy. It's even weirder because I just started drinking alli. I'm 23 year old from Miami, FL.

    Re: Unusual Periods

Hello. After not having your period for 5 months it is likely that it could be heavier and longer than usual - you should talk to your doctor about your concerns.

Best of health....Maria Marzella Sulli, Pharm.D.

    Re: Unusual Periods

    Hi chc0103,

You say you can't have any periods and haven't since 2004.  If you are spotting you will need to check it our with your doctor if it continues.  alli only works in the gut, it is non-systemically working and has no effect on the central nervous system, or on the hear or the brain. This would be an unusual occurence.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Unusual Periods

I can say that I am on the pill and have not spotted at all. There have been no irregularities whatsoever. No side effects at all. Everyone is different. If you have any reactions stop taking, stop complaining, go see your Dr. It's probably something else. You might be more sensitive than others...get over it.

I've been experiencing the same - a heavy period/spotting since I've started the pills almost 4 weeks ago. When I don't take the pills, then I don't have my period, and if I eat something a little over my fat intake max then I have a heavy period that day. Not on any birth control - but I'm sure there's a link between the pills and my weird period.

    Re: Unusual Periods

I am also spotting everyday while on Alli and have never spotted before.  I am 39 years old.    I have been on Alli for 8 days now.

    Hi ahkjak,

You should check this out with your physician. The flow of a period does not come and go as you describe, nor would the amount of fat eaten have an effect.  There is something else going on.  Rapid weight loss, a shift on fat distribution in the body, changes in diet and exercise can have an effect on your hormonal balance.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Unusual Periods

Just wanted to leave an update for my situation. I stopped taking Alli over a month ago. I still follow the fat gram intake recommendation and that is working for me. I spotted quite a bit while taking Alli and I have never gone 2 months without a period. I finally had it last week, but am still concerned about it for others taking alli. Not the fact that a lot of women are missing their periods and spotting all the time, but that the moderators continue to say the same thing, "Alli works in the gut, systematically blah blah blah" My health is more important than that blue pill and I am losing weight without it. I'm just sayin', do some more research on this, it is a real and obvious problem.

    Re: Unusual Periods

Thanks for your concern, but I'm doing quite well on alli, with no side effects.  The message boards rarely hear from satisfied users such as myself!

I have always had a regular period, on or off The Pill, and I continue to have a regular period while taking alli.  My sister just started menopause a few years ago and hadn't had a period for over a year and got one on the same day I started taking alli.  She's not taking alli--and she didn't even touch one of my pills--Go figure!  Personally, I don't know anyone who went through menopause and didn't have a number of unpredictable periods...As for missed periods and spotting--a lot of women these days are on low dose oral contraceptives that are much less forgiving if they are not taken at the same time each day/or taken every day.

I feel GREAT since I've started the alli plan!  I'm eating healthy meals and learning appropriate portion sizes.  Of course, I also haven't decreased my fat intake to zero or cut my calories down to near-anorexic levels, either (factors which definitely DO have a proven effect on menstruation).  If you don't want to take alli, that's your choice and you're entitled to it.  But there are a lot of women who can benefit from it and, if they give it a chance and don't go seeking problems, excuses and complaints, it will definitely work for them.

    Re: Unusual Periods

I'm 44 and began to skip my periods in March. I had my yearly in June and asked about taking Alli. She gave me the same story about only affecting the gut, etc. and said that it was totally safe. Six weeks after starting Alli, I've lost 12 pounds but started my period 3 days ago-the heaviest I've ever had in my life!!!! I have to stay near a bathroom, as I have to change protection (super +) often. The last 36 hours, I've had to change every hour. I was really glad to see that others are having similar problems. I thought there was something wrong. I never thought about the Alli.

    Re: Unusual Periods

    hi
I am on pill so my period comes regular but 2 year ago i took orlistat (like Alli but was prescribed) and i never had any side effect on my period..i can't really see a correlation between the 2 i think is more related with the amount of weight. When i was 50 lbs heavier my period was a complete mess when i start to lose weight after ups and downs i finally started to have a decent one...but you got me thinking now
