Re: Help! I can't stop eatting at night

    tarita:

Can anyone please help me. I can't stop eatting at night. I was doing so perfect at day time, but when the night fall i just can't stop my self. It's so hard because i'm a waitress and i see food all of time, the more i see it or smell it i just want to eat, it just like a time bomb exploded when i arrive home. Any motivation, advice, or criticism? please help

I am a night binger too.  This is mostly a habit.  You can conquer it though. try some baked tortilla chips and some salsa.  measure it though.  I also eat caramel rice cakes, the little ones, you can have 7 for 60cals.  I have a sweet tooth sometimes.  I do however add this to my calories for the day and do not go over the total for the day. I include some snacks for evening.  also air popped popcorn with some 0 cal 0 fat spray margarine. it's good and popcorn is about 25 cal. per cup. if you really want to do it you can find a way to satisfy whatever tooth you have without going over your total calories.  some hunger pains are normal and external not internal. meaning you are not really hungry, you are eating out of habit. do something else because most cravings last only 20 min. or so.

Re: Help! I can't stop eatting at night

I would recommend making yourself a fruit salad and keeping it ready for your night time snack.  I like this time of the year because all the fruits are in season and taste wonderful.  I also keep thinking about how hard my work out was today and how hard it was to burn 250 calories.  Why work that hard and eat all those extra calories?

Re: Help! I can't stop eatting at night

I work nights. Problem is I always had my kids at home, once they were old enough, so I would come home & fix breakfast, fix lunch, then they older ones would want a snack after school, then supper, all before I went to work, then you get hungry working at night. I dont have to get up with the kids anymore, but still want to eat breakfast, get up eat lunch, a snack at 4, then supper, & eat at night. I found a long time ago to try to spread my calories through the day. It not the best thing to do to eat then go to bed, but not a total disaster either. I am 45 & have only been fat for about 7 years. I had gained a little when my motabilism changed unexpectedly, then more since I quit smoking 3 years ago. I am pretty sure that your best bet would be to save some calories to eat at night. Try to make it low fat, like your fruits & veggies. If you dont exceed your calories, you should still lose, just not as fast, or maybe as much.

I personally am in a size 18, & just want to get back into a 14. I was comfortable there. Isnt all about feeling your best.

Re: Help! I can't stop eatting at night

I re-read my post, my kids were not running around unattended while I was sleeping. The older ones had a sitter til they went to school, the youngest had the older ones in the summer, & Dad is a farmer, so Dad in the winter, just wanted to clear that up.

I found that If I ate enough at meals and dessert after dinner (silouette Ice cream sandwich 1.5 gms/fat) I was not eating all night. I've started reading again. You have to find something to do instead of reaching for that snack....If it's not in the house you can't be tempted.

Re: Help! I can't stop eatting at night

    Hi Tarita,

It looks like you have been given some really great advice. I want to point out a very real problem for some people that is often misdiagnosed. Night eating syndrome is a problem that there is treatment for. You can go to http://www.thelifestylecompany.com/articles/articledetail.asp?publicationid=23 to read more about it. There is also a book called Overcoming Night Eating Syndrome: A Step-By-Step Guide to Breaking the Cycle... that may help. I hate to see people suffering with something as real as this and not know why.

I hope that this helps some of you,

    Betty Kovacs, MS, RD

Thanks Betty - I read the article and it hits home. So glad you pointed this out to me and so many others who suffer from this Night eating syndrome! I thought I had conquered the bulimia in my youth but apparently it is still around in a differnt hybrid form! :(

Re: Help! I can't stop eatting at night

Honey first of all know you can do this. If I can do this anybody can. I was a binge eater who always did it at night. I would want everything in the kitchen with nothing hitting the spot. I am 47 and I had hit 220. I had not always weighed that much. Matter of fact I have 2 kids and never hit 200 when they were both delivered. My doctors were telling me that I was going to have serious problems if I did not do something. I had even checked into gastric bypass. Was thinking about it seriosly but with my health insurance I had to be under a doctor's care for 6 month and then and only then would they consider paying for it. Oh I meet all the other criteria with my BMI almost 40. I had been seeing the ALLI signs hanging in our Walgreens so I started checking it out. I was on the phone days before it calling. I got mine the 1st day it was in the store which was June 14th. I feel like that is my anniversary or something because from that day on I have had hope. I have lost 13 lbs as of today.

I have said all this to say this. You have to do this. Pray for self control. Make sure you take your ALLI at night so you will be afraid of treatment effects if you don't stay on track. All of you who only have a few lbs to lose I say go for it before you reach the point I was at. For those of you who like me have a lot to lose I say we can do this, I think they have summed it up so well. We need to be Commited to this. We can and will see this to our goal weight.

    Cheering you on in BAMA<><

Re: Help! I can't stop eatting at night

Snacking in the evening is def. my biggest battle.  However, one thing that has worked great for me is GUM.  It gives that munching feeling.  It has helped alot.

Re: Help! I can't stop eatting at night

I can't explain why, but if I eat after I exercise, my appetite is smaller, my cravings fewer, and I stay full longer.  I take karate, most of the classes are at night.  As long as I eat dinner after class, I am typically done for the day.  You might want to try a little exercise between getting off work and eating dinner.  Works for me, might help.

I wasn't hungry but just wanted to eat so i took only one cup of yogurt and that was it for the night and i had very little during the day. I felt like i lost weight everyday. Has anyone also experienced the same thing?
