    Getting Discouraged ~ Weight Gain

I have been on alli since July 1st and have gained 4 lbs.!!  I have been eating very low fat (my plan is supposed to be 19g/meal and I am eating 4-6g/meal) and I have been walking at least 45 min/day.  Has anyone else experienced this type of weight gain?  I have had some TE, but I need advice about how to turn things around.  Should I go completely no-fat for a couple of weeks?  I have almost 70lbs. to lose and I don't need to be adding more weight to that...

Looking forward to any help/advice :(

I'd just keep plugging away and see what happens. What you might try is varying your carb intake vs. protein intake, and keep the fats low. Personally, I think the amount of fat recommended in the booklets is too high... I'm doing less than 30g per day, and I'm losing like crazy without even doing any walking or exercise.

Keep in mind, also, that you could be building muscle mass by walking, and muscle is heavier than fat - that could be where the gain is coming from.

Another thing I've figured out is that some people do better with higher carb vs. lower carb diets. You could look into increasing your complex carbs by a LOT - twice as much as protein carbs. See if that works. It's doing the job for me - 8 lbs the first week on alli.

Re: Getting Discouraged ~ Weight Gain

I am a big watcher of that show the biggest loser and I remember in several seasons certain people gaining weight the 1st week, so don't be discouraged, it can still work for you if you stick with it.  I was a health major in college and I remember my nutrition professor saying that no fat in a diet is not good b/c we need fat in our diets just not an excess of it.  You could be going about it so strick that your body is going into starvation mode and preserving its fat and burning off its proteins first which is not good, this happens a lot to anorexic patients. If you eat the recommended 15 grams at a sitting, I think you'll start losing but it may take a week or so.

If you're female, maybe it could be PMS?  I notice I always lose the most weight right after my period (loss of all that stored water).  If you're on a diet and walking and taking the pill, GAINING weight sounds odd to me, chances are it will work.

If you don't eat fat Alli is not doing anything for you. Alli only eliminates the calories from the FAT YOU EAT. So if you are eating all your calories and skipping fat, you are absorbing all the calories you have eaten. If you eat 15 grams of fat per meal, 25% of the calories from the 15 grams leaves your body unabsorbed. Eating as close to your fat limit each meal is the only way to lose weight on Alli.

Good luck! We can do it!!!!

Re: Getting Discouraged ~ Weight Gain

Hang in there!  It's hard not to get discouraged.  I too have gained since starting Alli.  I  have gained 5 pounds, and I do not understand why!  I am taking this as an opportunity to re-focus and take my frustrations out on a workout!

You may want to be careful with the 4-6g of fat intake. I have been advised that it may be a waste of time & money to take Alli at 5g of fat and below.  Also, if you are working out that hard and not taking in enough fat and calories, your body may be going into emergency store mode, but I am in no way an expert on any of this, but its something to look into.

I think if we hang in there we can do it, and its great to have communication with others who are in the same canoe, whether it be tipping or not!  :)
