    Bleeding gums and tooth pain

Recently started Alli, and my gums started to bleed and teeth hurt. Read on Oristat that is a side effect, and since Alli is a lessened dose of same, assume this is why it occured. What can be done to lessen this, as I really do not want to stop taking the pills.

Re: Bleeding gums and tooth pain

Please speak to your doctor or dentist before continuing with alli.  There is nothing you can do to lessen this, but you need to be sure what is causing it.

Your well-being is of outmost concern.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Bleeding gums and tooth pain

I have been having the same problem. I have perfect teeth - I have never had a cavity, and visit the dentist every six months. I am 41 years old. I brush and floss twice a day. Since taking alli (three weeks now, following the program exactly), I have had severe gum and tooth pain. I called my dentist's emergency line over the weekend, thinking perhaps it was something serious. He had me come into the office yesterday. It ends up that it IS the alli causing the problems. He told me to get off alli immediately, and that he has now seen around ten cases in the past two weeks.

I hope I didn't harm my teeth permanently due to alli. I'm a bit scared. The pain should go away in a couple of days after getting off the medication, he said. I will return to the dentist for a followup next week.

Did your dentist mention what about Alli is causing the soreness?  I am having the same side effects and was about to call the dentist myself.  Thanks for posting this!

Re: Bleeding gums and tooth pain

You can try rinsing with perioxide or there is an over the counter oral rinse we recommended for our patients that you can get it at Wally world it's Peridex. Stay away from from "strong" toothpaste.   The best to use is plain, regular Crest.  Stay away from any rinses that contain alcohol.  Bleeding gums is a very serious condition but try the Peridex for a week along with gental brushing and flossing for a week.  If you see an improvement, keep doing it while you are taking Alli, if you don't see an improvement, get off Alli, it's not for you and do the treatment for another week.  If no improvement, go to your dentist, depending on your perio charting numbers you may need their help.  After being in the dental field for 20 years, be careful of "Money Seekers".  Even though your "perio numbers may be above the norm of 0-3 if you brush and floss regularly, it's not due to lack of cleaning properly and the Peridex should work.  Remember, seeing a difference in a week doesn't mean you can stop the Peridex, it means it's working.  Use it through out your Alli experience.  I have just started my Alli and now that I read this, I will start the Peridex to prevent this from happening to me.

Re: Bleeding gums and tooth pain

Hello. After some research, I am unable to find a reputable drug information site that connects orlistat to tooth pain. Theoretically, if you are not getting enough vitamin K, bleeding gums may be a sign of that. Since alli blocks some of the absorption of vitamin K, that may explain some gum bleeding but I cannot find a connection to the tooth pain. I suggest if you are experiencing this to call the consumer health line at 1-800-671-2554 and report it.

You can try adding some foods rich in vitamin K to your diet if you notice bleeding gums. Dark green leafy vegetables are the best source - and great to enhance a diet! And be sure your multivitamin has vitamin K listed as an ingredient.

Regarding the above post about Peridex. Peridex is a prescription mouth rinse prescribed for gingivitis. It is not available over-the-counter.

Be sure to notify your dentist if you are experienceing changes in your oral or dental health. Bleeding gums and tooth pain can be signs of serious conditions that should be evaluated by a dentist.

    Hope this helps!

Re: Bleeding gums and tooth pain

My teeth don't hurt but the lining of my mouth seems like it is infected - it is red and sore and it burns when I use mouth wash.  I also have horrible dry mouth and I drink at gallon of water a day.  I have stopped using Alli for now.  I want to see if it goes away - I have an appt with my dentist next week just to make sure it is not something else.

Re: Bleeding gums and tooth pain

I also started having teeth and gum pain (more of a burning sensation) as of yesterday.  I am going to stop taking ALLI to see if that is what is causing the problem.

Re: Bleeding gums and tooth pain

    Hi maria425,

Tooth and gum pain is not a normal side effect of alli, but if this does occur it may be a sensitivity to the product and discontinuing use of the product is recommended and well as checking it out with your dentist if the pain persists.

For product-related questions or to report the occurrence of treatment effects and/or any adverse events related to alli, you may call our product customer service line at 1-800-671-2554 (M-F 9am – 9pm EST).

    Hope this helps. Feel Better.

    Hi mrsyeagerin07,

alli is not association with affecting the lining of the mouth, but if you are allergic to the product it is possible.  It is best to check it our with your dentist as you will be doing.

Re: Bleeding gums and tooth pain

If you are a little overweight the risk of diabetes goes up and dry mouth with gum problems is a symptom.  It could be other medications ex. anti-thyroid drugs (personal experience), before you listen to your dentist I would have a doctor check you out.

Re: Bleeding gums and tooth pain

I too am experiencing problems with my teeth.  Mainly a sensitivity to cold /hot foods.  I can't even eat salads unless they are room temperature.  It doesn't hurt to bite down or hurt when I am not eating.  It started about a month that I started taking Alli.  I did see a dentist and he couldn't find anything wrong. I'll put up with it the pain because a month ago is when I finally started to lose weight.  Maybe after I lose most of my unwanted pounds, I'll try tocut back and see if it improves.
