I don't follow the diet plan Alli uses (low-fat, low calorie). To me, it's more beneficial to follow a diet with a lower amount of carbs and a higher amount of fat. Here's why:
1. Low fat foods tend to be higher in carbs and sugar to give them taste. If you don't use up those carbs, they get stored in the body, resulting in extra pounds.
2. Everyone remembers the low carb craze a few years ago...it was a big thing because people were actually losing weight on it, and fast.
3. Since I don't take in many carbs, I'm now restricting some of my fats as well, which is making me lose weight faster!
I've gone from 170 (last March) to my current weight of 141 lbs. I weigh myself daily, and although I've only been on Alli for a day (my diet wasn't altered, no exercise), I've lost 0.8lbs from yesterday. As you can see, this is at a faster rate than with low-carb alone if you compute my weight loss from the past three months. No treatment effects either!
This is a good way for me to lose weight, I'm a medical student with too little time to exercise. Good luck!
