***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

    Hi Everyone,

I had posted this in response to a question and was told that it helped a lot of people understand why you need to reach your fat goal:

The way to lose weight is to consume fewer calories than your body needs. If you are sticking to your calorie goal for at least two weeks and you do not lose anything that means you need to cut your calories back a bit. You can cut back by 200 to 300 calories per day from what you were doing.

Now for my explanation on fat. I believe that fad diets have done a great deal of damage to peoples view on diet and nutrition. We have guidelines for good, healthy nutrition based on extensive research and yet the fad diets, that usually have no research to support their claims, have more impact on shaping our eating than the guidelines. There is such a thing as too little fat and it will cause problems for your weight and health. If you want the research to support this I would be happy to provide it.

The guidelines for our diets can be seen at http://www.iom.edu/?id=12702 and are:

    • 45 percent to 65 percent from carbohydrates
    • 20 percent to 35 percent from fat
    • 10 percent to 35 percent from protein

The alli plan requires that 30% of your calories come from fat. Out of those calories, 25% are going to be excreted. This mean that your diet is actually 22.5% fat, which is close to the minimal amount recommended. For anyone who consumes less than 30% and takes alli, you are going under the recommendations for fat. That means that you are also going over the recommendations for carbs and/or protein. Too much and too little of any nutrient is a problem.

You have all invested your money, time, and hopes in this so why not trust it and do as recommended? When you need to cut back on your calories that is fine. The key is the balanced diet component. If you read the credentials for the people who have told you how to follow the fad diets you will be amazed to see how few have any training in nutrition. Your being given advice from nutrition experts on here and are being told the truth about how to do this the "right" way. If you can commit to learning to balance things out for the next 3 months it will be an investment that can end up improving your health and well-being while losing weight. Wouldn't it be great if this were the last diet that you had to go on?

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

I'd also like to add this.  Once I grasped that upping the fat content while keeping your caloric intake the same helped you lose more weight with Alli, it's made a lot of sense to me, so hopefully others will find it helpful too!

Here's another reason to up your fat intake while on the Alli plan:

Assume you eat your 1600 calories a day, and only 20 grams of fat per day.  Alli works by blocking 25% of the fat that you eat, so Alli would block 5 grams of fat in this case.  Since a gram of fat has 9 calories, Alli blocked 45 calories for the day, leaving your net intake at 1555 calories.

On the other hand, if you eat 1600 calories a day, and your recommended 51 grams of fat (remember, 3 grams are in a snack at which you don't take Alli), Alli will block 12.75 grams of fat, which is 114.75 calories.  Your net caloric intake here is 1485.25 calories.  That's a significant difference from the first case.

Bottom line is, if you eat the recommended fat, Alli will cut more calories from you diet and you'll lose weight faster.

Good luck!  I know it's counterintuitive to eat more fat, but as long as you eat the fat and stay within your calorie guidelines you'll be better off.  (And I think fat helps me stay more satisfied with what I eat.  It's tasty.)

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

    Hi,

I have a question about the fat intake.  Everyone says that women should take Flax Seed Oil for the omega 3.  A friend of mine told me to buy it at a health food store in a refridgerated oil form.  For the serving size, 1T I believe, it is 120 Calories and 13 gram of Fat.  My Alli plans allows for 1800 calories and 19 grams of Fat a day.  I really don't want to use 13 of the 19 grams on Flax Seed oil that I mix into a drink!  Does anyone know more about this?

    kbowersox,

If you read the guidelines more carefully you will see that is 19 grams of fat per meal, not per day.

    Best of luck,

    Caryl

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

    kbowersox,

The best way to obtain omega 3  is through the foods you eat.  I would suggest foregoing the tablespoon of flax seed oil for a serving of salmon, for example.  But if you are going to use this supplement, I'd suggest that you not take it with a meal, as long as you're taking alli.  The tablespoon of flax seed oil almost equals your total fat target for a meal--adding the extra fat into a meal would mean you could suffer treatment effects, as 25% of the oil will pass through and not be absorbed by your body anyhow.

Alternatively, you could take your flax seed oil at night, at least 2 hours after taking an alli pill.  This would allow the alli to get out of your system so that the flax seed oil would have a chance to be absorbed and not blocked by alli.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

    Need some advise!

OK, I get the 19 grams of fat are per meal (Thanks Caryl, figured that out about 15 minutes after I posted the question).  Can anyone give me some idea's of foods that are going to up the fat grams without overloading the calories?  I started the program last week and haven't noticed anything to get excited about yet, but I am hopeful.  I don't want to waste time eating wrong.  I already know that I do not eat the amount of fat grams a day that I should and I want to change that.  Problem is, I can hit the calorie target no problem, but I can't hit the fat mark.  I am pretty good at reading food labels and making the better choices, (not that I always do, hence I am on a diet website) but I have lost weight in the past after my kids with the knowledge that I have and the drive to succeed at it.  Over the last couple of years (since 35 years hit), I am having trouble like I have never experienced.  I have had all the  medical test and such to rule out thyroid and such, it appears it is just me struggling without a medical issue (which is good, I know), yet very frustrating.  I walk about 30 minutes a day 3 or 4 days a week, eat pretty good most of the time, have a few cocktails that I realize don't help but seem necessary some days -lol.

I feel like I need a new formula of eating!  Can anyone help??????

Something that has really helped me since I started taking alli is using their recipes. I don't use the whole menu but I do go through and find meals that sound good and make those. They have some really good recipes and this way you know that you are going to be hitting both your calorie and fat targets.

    Hope this has helped you.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

    Hi Betty,

I started the plan on Sept. 8th and in the pre-plan and during that week lost 3 lbs.,YAY!  During that time I had a hard time reaching the 1600 calories per day and the 17 grams of fat per meal.  This week met the 1600 calories but I am still having a hard time reaching the fat required per meal.

Didn't loose this week so I will cut back on the calories by 200 to 300 as suggested but how do I reach my fat intake per meal?

My eating habits are:  low fat foods, carbs..(that's a problem, love them) fruits and vegetables and cheeses and ice cream..no sugar added.  I am not a junk food junkie, sweets do not tempt me.  Please point me in the right direction.  Thank you so much.

    Gloria in So Florida.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

    Hi Betty,

I started taking my Alli pills yesterday.  I weigh 205 (62") and the MyAlliPlan on the website gives me daily calories of 1,800 and a fat gram target of 19 per meal.  I also purchased the "Alli Diet Plan" book by Caroline Apovian, MD for additional guidance and it says to start with Phase l at 15% total daily fat grams which is 30 per day (for about a week) then move on to Phase 2 at 20% total daily fat grams (for about a week) which is 40 fat grams per day, the Phase 3 at 60 fat grams per day.  I want the Alli Plan to work for me but so far the only consistent target I've read is the 1,800 daily calories for my weight.  Please help.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

Kathy .. I'm also on the 1800 calorie/60 fat gram program.  I followed the guidelines in the bit Alli book.  Since I've been on this since June I'm following 14 grams for breakfast (which I rarely meet), 19 for lunch, 22 for dinner (which is also difficult) and that leaves me 6 divided between my 2 snacks.

I'm happy if I reach 18 fat grams for lunch and dinner :)

Check out some of the posts on the Personal Experience board ... you'll find lots of help/suggestions there (you'll soon be an expert like we are now hahaha)

    Good luck to ya :)

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

I have the same problems with hitting the fat grams.  I have tried to hit the calories and fat grams, but am not always totally successful (as long as I don't go over I usually do ok).  So far I've lost about 3 lbs.  I don't want to eat high-fat empty calories like fries, etc.  So, instead I have started taking raw (or roasted) almonds with me to work in a little baggie.  24 nuts have 14 grams of fat and a lot of crunchy flavor.  If I'm really craving something sweet besides fruit, and I want to add a little fat, I might add a few (less than 10) dark chocolate m&m's for a little sweetness.

    Hope this helps!

I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE SOME SUGAR FREE CANDIES, MOSTLY CHOCOLATES. THAT ARE LOW IN CALORIES AND HIGH IN FAT. JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU EAT THE RECOMMENDED SERVING SIZE.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

I am having a hard time with getting 15 grams of fat per meal. Everything I buy seems to be fat free so I am typically only eating 5 to 10 grams of fat per meal. Is this OK or can it be a problem with the weight loss. I have only lost 6 lbs. in 3 weeks.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

I thought it would be easier to use prepared meals such as Michelinas Lean Gourmet and Smart Ones desserts but even at 4 meals a day I don't come close to my calorie allowance nor the fat allowance. After two weeks I see that this isn't working. I also ride my stationery bike 1-3 hours a day 7 days a week. I desperately need help figuring this out.

Re: ***READ FIRST - Why you need to reach your fat grams

Ok... I am so new at all this... I really struggle with the fat grams... I guess I am not understanding how to add up, or count how much fat grams I'm really eating with my meals or snacks.... what I really mean is I guess I don't know how to read the box's etc... and estimate how much fat is in things I am eating... <shrug>

    HELP?
