On the one diet I had done before I attended one group class at my old gym. Boy did I feel like a fish out of water. It was a dance class and it seems like everyone knew the moves (except me).
Fast forward several years and now I'm on this program.
I went to a couple of step classes, and the instructors were very supportive and basically said do what you can do, and work at your own pace. That has encouraged me quite a bit more.
Recently I started going to an evening class using the BOSU device. This class is full of 20 somethings (mostly women) and again it seems like they all know the moves. Again, the instructor is very supportive, and lets you know if you need to take a break or do something at your own pace it's ok.
Some tips to enjoy classes you haven't tried:
- Talk to the instructor before the class and let them know you are new at it
- Stake out a position towards the rear, so if you have to take a break (and you will) it won't be so embarrassing
- Don't be afraid to come a little early and ask the instructor for tips
- Work at your own pace and enjoy yourself
The benefits of working in group classes are several. They include:
- A much more intense workout, as they are usually oriented to those more fit
- Fun of working in a group setting
- Usually fun music, and a fast pace
- The time flies
- The view ain't bad
- You almost undoubtedly will be working muscles that don't normally get worked in your current cardio routine
Anyone else want to share their group workout experiences?
