Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

Congrats Kim, that's fantastic to loose that much in 16 weeks.  Your body probably needs alittle time to adjust to the lower dosage.

I am also on synthroid but have my thyroid and plan on after 20-25 pounds gone go in and have my levels tested to make sure my dosage is still good.

Keep it up, you inspire me.

Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

I would just like to thank everyone who has posted there insight. And I also am on thyroid med and I take 125mmg every morning. And I was wondering, well first I think I might have not been taking the Alli correctly. I was taking it everytime that I ate and well I wasn't reaching my 15grams of fat for my meals. So I'm assuming that maybe I should stop taking the alli in the morning. Also I had lost about 10 lbs in the first week and a half. And it seems like I'm at a stand still.  I didn't start taking the  alli until I about a week or so after I started my diet. I've also started going to a Zumba class. Which I actually enjoy. However it just seems like I hit a major hump and can't get over it. Does anyone have any advice for me.

Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

I'm on my second round of Alli.  :)  Last year I lost 40 lbs from January - July.  My doctor lowered my synthroid dose and I stopped gaining weight, then I slowly started gaining it again.  At my October appt I told him that I felt my TSH was off and that I'd stopped losing and started gaining and he said my body had just reached a point where this diet had peaked.  He kept me at the lower dose.  In December I called his nurse and told her that I wanted my TSH drawn again so she arranged it.  I was once again hypothyroid!  TSH was over 10!  Needless to say, my dose was upped again and I'll go back the middle of next month to have it re-tested.  In the meantime, I've started back with Alli two weeks ago and lost 3 lbs.  I know it will be a struggle to re-lose what I gained back and the extra 20 I didn't lose the first time around, but it's going to happen.  My advice is to really listen to your body and watch your TSH levels to make sure your meds are adjusted when they need to be.  I also do not take Alli with breakfast as I rarely go over 5 gms of fat for that meal.  I hit plateaus every few weeks and they could last up to 3 weeks then I'd start losing again.  Do no be discouraged by plateaus.  Drink lots of water.  Stay away from soft drinks.  You will get over the hump and you will feel fabulous when you do!!!!  How much are you trying to lose?  Maybe we can do it together.

Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

hi! i'm new to this message board thing but when i saw your post i felt like i could really talk to you! i have been on levothyroxine since around the middle of Sept. haven't really felt any different or seen any progress as far as weight loss or increase in energy. my specialist suggested taking alli in dec but i didn't actually start until jan 5. i lost 6 lbs in about 2 weeks (1 week before, 1 week on alli) but hit a plateau and got really frustrated!! i am hungry all the time and extra extra tired, no energy at all, so i don't feel like exercising ever.

my question is: did you go through the same thing as far as fatigue and hunger? if so, how did you get through it and lose the weight that you lost. i need to lose about 25-30 lbs.

any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

Welcome to Alli!  I'd say that for me, the first 2 - 3 weeks are the hardest.  That's when I feel a bit bloated and tired.  Between the 2nd and 3rd week, I start to "come around" and feel better.  I always advise anyone trying Alli to commit to a full 30 days before making a decision to discontinue.  You've already paid for at least 30 days, may as well see it through.  Most wind up staying with it.

Levothyroxine and Synthroid are not "magic pills".  Contrary to popular opinion, simply getting your dose right doesn't mean the weight is going to drop right off you.  It simply means that with alot of hard work, you should now be able to lose weight like a normal person.  Remember, if you have hypothyroidism, you don't have a normal metabolism and if you're also a yo-yo dieter, chances are you've destroyed most of your bodies normal reactions to eating less and your body will go into hybernation drive and not allow you to lose weight.  If you're hungry, you're not eating enough!  Ask yourself if the hunger is a result of you being aware that you're on a diet or is is actual hunger.  A good way to test this is to drink a glass of water (some think that cold water will speed up your metabolism, for me, regular tap water fills me up faster).  Wait 10 minutes.  If you're still hungry, eat a piece of fruit.  Bananas are especially filling.  A single serving of cottage cheese or Activia also seems to do the trick for me.

No energy also shows that you're not eating enough.  Be sure to eat breakfast.  Cereal is fine.  Try a whole grain cereal, then a piece of fruit mid morning, a light lunch (I like wraps with lots of lettuce and deli lunch meat and pretzels), then yogurt or more fruit mid afternoon.  For dinner I have whatever the family is having but I load up on the veg and stay clear of the fats.  Then mid evening I have 2 Wasa crackers wtih Laughing Cow cheese spread!  My luxury!  If I crave sweets, I'll have a low fat hot chocolate.  It seems to do the trick.

    YOU CAN DO IT!

PS I hate exercise!  I usually just walk the dog!  Ha!

Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

    Good morning!

I just googled Alli & Hypothyroidism and found you! (so much easier than searching the boards at times)

I'm new here (real NEWBIE) - haven't lost anything YET - I was wondering if you could tell me how long before you started losing weight.

I've been making alot of soups (potatoe soup a few days ago and creme of broccoli soup yesterday - both made with low-fat chicken broth and half & half).  I really haven't started exercising yet - I was going to do that today.  I'm just concerned at how fast the weight loss starts...

Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

Welcome to the boards!  When I first started Alli I lost 6 lbs the first week and 3 the second week, then tapered off to 1 - 2 lbs a week.  (Water weight comes off first!).  I would have plateaus that would last up to 3 weeks of no weight loss, then I'd lose 2 - 4 lbs at the following weigh in.  But....it wasn't just the lbs.  Even when I wasn't weighing less, I could feel my clothes getting looser.  From January - July 2008 I went from a size 22 to a 14/16.  That's an amazing difference to me!

Soups are good, but really watch the creamy soups.  They are filling, but the fat can sneak up on you.  Make sure you eat 3 meals and 2 - 3 snacks a day to keep your metabolism going.  Not eating enough is a weight loss stopper!

If you're not a regular exerciser (like me!), then start off slowly.  Take a ten minute walk, then build up the time over a couple of weeks.  For me, it was more about toning then sweating it out.  To each his own I guess.

You won't lose the weight overnight, much as we'd like to, and there will be times you will become really discouraged, but hang in there.  It's so worth it.

I went off the Alli due to some thyroid swings, but I'm back on now and losing 1 lb a week.  I'll be 50 in June and hope to reach my goal by then.  I would like to be a healthy, off the rack, size 12!  To me, that would be a dream!  You have to set realistic goals.  I'll never be a size 0, I'd look like death warmed over at a 9.  Twelve is good for me.

Good luck and keep in touch.  Don't let it be all about the lbs.  Think about how you feel and how your clothes fit too.

Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

I started using the WII Fit today also , so HOPING the weight I gained on the fertility drugs will be out of my system in no time!

30+lbs to lose.....although I do have one more attempt at IVF, so I may have to put the ALLI on hold if I get pregnant this time.....

Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

I have a friend who swears by the Wii Fit.  She loves it.  I don't have one yet.  Not sure I'd use it if I did.  I work from home so you think it would be easy to get some exercise in during the day, but my boss not only calls when he needs me, he emails and IM's me and if I don't answer right away....you know how it goes.  Anyway...good luck on getting pregnant.  Is this your first or do you have other children?

I have a 12yr old and have been bugging DH for another for 10yrs - he finally is "alllowing" me to try again - just hope it ISN'T too late.

I weighed myself this morning and have lost 4lbs already - I'm so thrilled - didn't do much exercise above going for a walk in the park with DD and a dog, but will be back at it tomorrow.  The WII fit is really fun!!!

    Good luck!!

Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

about the third week was the hardest for me. like i said, i'm hungry all the time but the thing is i already do all of that stuff! the banana or an apple, low fat graham crackers!! i drink water all the time to try to see if i'm really hungry or just bored: i'm really hungry. i am extremely frustrated because i eat all the time but i'm still hungry. i even switched to whole grains because i heard that they keep you feeling full longer. has not worked yet.

    any other advice?

Re: Alli and Hypothyroidism taking Levothyroxine

I find that I can satisfy my hunger with protein, especially in the morning.  Eggs, turkey, low fat cheese or chicken are filling.   I also like to wrap a corn tortilla (very low in fat) with turkey bacon and salsa for breakfast.

Try Fibersure in a hot drink like tea or coffee.  The fiber is filling.  I also like pretzels when I'm hungry.  I also like Wasa crackers with laughing cow low fat cheese!  That's my favorite.  If you're craving something sweet, try hot cocoa.  I prefer the sugar free to the low fat.  One cup seems to fill me up.

That would be a huge differences in ages!  Mine are 20 and 18 and I have baby fever, but it's not gonna happen!  ha!  Guess I'll have to wait for grandchildren and I'm willing to wait a long time for that!  Losing weight now may help you to conceive but you'll have to watch your weight gain so it won't be so hard after.  4 lbs is fabulous!  Keep it up!
