Nutrition; 1588/71/92 No cardio, no strength training ... no car (being fixed due to the fender-bender) so no gym today but I got my car back so maybe tomorrow morning!
Nita - With my cane, I hobbled into the gym in 2006 to do the only thing I could do: ride the recumbent bike. For the first year, except for one guy, none of the 6 AM jocks talked to me. Why make a friend with a handicapped woman when one can be friends with able-bodied people? It's not just the jocks at the gym. In the past, I'm sure I've done the same thing myself. The last year or so, it's been different ... I'm a regular and the morning crowd is much friendlier than they were in 2006 (I also got rid of the cane 1 1/2 years ago). I moved to this town in Dec 2003. Historically, I've moved due to my husband's work, and I've made friends by volunteering. I was in a bad car accident (the other driver caused the accident) in April 2004 (hence the cane), so in this new town, I couldn't volunteer. I got to know doctors and physical therapists but really no one else. I became "friends" with the wives of my husband's friends. They're very nice people but it's not the same as me making friends for myself.
2 or 3 months ago, I found a necklace in the locker room at the gym and turned it in to the front desk. It turned out the diamond in the necklace was from the owner's grandmother and her husband had it styled into a necklace for their 10th wedding anniversary so the necklace was very special to her. The owner, a 32 year-old, was so appreciative, she took me to lunch and we became friends. Since we're at the gym at the same time, we now work out together. I'm 59, so it seems odd and nice at the same time to have a friend who is only 2 years older than my son. It's nice to have a friend who is a nice person and has the same health and fitness interests that I do. it's been a lonely couple of years so I appreciate friendship more than ever!
