First pill and I'm a bit freaked out

I took my first Alli pill Tuesday night with dinner.  Wednesday morning, I had the orange oily TE's and wasn't mentally prepared to see that coming out of my body so I figured I'd stop, re-evaluate and begin anew on Monday.  It's now Saturday and I am STILL having the oily TE's from the one pill that I took on Tuesday!!  Is this typical of anyone else? And how long can I realistically expect the contents of one pill to stay in my body and bind to the fat?  I thought it would have dissolved, utilized and done by now, hence the need to take it 3 x's a day.  On top of that, I'm also eating sensibly so I'm at a loss.  Thanks for any feedback!

Re: First pill and I'm a bit freaked out

hi, did you follow the plan for a few days before you started the pills .

i only had the problem with the yukky oil a couple of times right at the start when i guessed at the fat i was eating.

are you using the nutrition log as i know i was very surprised at the amount of fat in what i thought were healthy foods so now i log everything before i eat it just to be sure my fat intake is just below that recommended.

good luck, i hope you manage to settle down on the pills

Re: First pill and I'm a bit freaked out

I had them too. My husband was a little freaked when the toilet didn't flush all of it down and I didn't notice ! oops!  They do go away as long as you watch the fat content really really well.  They could come back, but don't freak.  I started the pills Dec 1 and had them for a few days.  I'm also doing WW again, and I find that if I stick to my points exactly, then I don't have them. If I go over (the weekly extra points that are allowed), that is when I get them.

    Hang in there!

I started the pills Friday, Dec 5, I have had the opposite effect, I haven't had a BM since, I am meeting my fat & calories, eating a lot of salad, fruits & veggies, should I use metamucile or add more fiber?

Re: First pill and I'm a bit freaked out

Wow.  My sympathies.  I haven't had anything like that at all and I have been taking alli for 16 weeks now.  The worst thing I've had is a little tummy grumbling once or twice.

I was a little, ahem, backed up for the first few days, but I was so afraid of TEs I wasn't anywhere close to meeting my fat goal.  Once I increased my fat, I was ok.

It took me quite a while to get all the pieces put together on this diet.  I measure and write down everything I eat and how many fat and calories.  I never guess.  If I don't know the fat content, I don't eat it or (very rarely) I don't take a pill.  It took some trial and error before I could get my calories and fat grams not too high or too low, and the exercise happening every day.  But every week when I do it all right, I lose a couple of pounds.

You might want to direct your questions to the dietitian.  It sure doesn't sound normal to me.  Good luck!  This really is a wonderful way to lose weight once you master all the details of it.

Re: First pill and I'm a bit freaked out

    Hi Michelle,

There are many, many posts on here about constipation. You can find them by using the search command on the upper right corner. A couple of things to help you with this are:

    1. Reach your recommended amount of fat for every meal. Less is not better so make sure that you stick with the plan.

    2. Consume a high fiber diet. You can get fiber from fresh fruits (skin and the seeds are the key), veggies, and whole grains.

    3. Drink plenty of water and other beverages in order to stay hydrated. Without enough fluid it won't matter how much fiber you consume.

    4. Avoid foods that are binding and can cause constipation. These foods are bananas, rice, applesauce, tea, toast, and cheese.

    5. Watch the iron content in your vitamin. Iron can be constipating so if you don't need it take an iron free multivitamin.

Give these a try and let me know how it goes,

    Betty Kovacs, MS, RD
