    Alli and thyroid issues

I am interested in starting Alli, but I see warnings on the package about people with thyroid problems. Can anyone enlighten me to what these problems may be?

    Re: Alli and thyroid issues

I can't enlighten you but I'd like to know more myself. I take thyroid for hypothyroidism and want to start Alli and am wondering how to proceed also.

Goal: To make it 4 weeks on the alli plan.

    Re: Alli and thyroid issues

     Hi,

I am hypo-thyroid, and I have no problems taking alli.  I did however lose 30 pounds and found I had to have my medication adjusted-twice.  I think that's what the warning's about on the package.  Just let your doctor know, and  they may want you to get your bloodwork done if you start losing weight.

    Good luck!

    Re: Alli and thyroid issues

I have a slow thyroid and my doctor recommended taking Alli without my asking him because I was having problems losing weight.  The only restraint is not taking Alli within two hours of taking the thyroid medicine.  Thyroid medicine is best taken first thing in the morning, so I eat a fat free breakfast of yogurt and an apple.  I only take Alli with lunch and dinner.  I don't like taking the multivitimin at bedtime because it makes me restless, so I take my multi with breakfast.  By the time lunch comes around the multi and thyroid are safely absorbed so the Alli doesn't bind with anything but fat.  I've lost 20 pounds so far and I'm thrilled with the results.  I hope you have good luck as well.

    Re: Alli and thyroid issues

     Hi All,

Okay, for those with questions about taking alli that are also taking thyroid meds/other meds.  My mom too takes a numerous amount of prescription meds, and also am on thyroid meds for her hypo active thyroid.  If anything it has helped her to lose more weight than just with the thyroid meds alone.  She has had no problem and since the Alli is FDA approved, she checked with her doctor, and he said it's fine, it won't interfere with the other meds she is on and with the thyroid meds.  At most, check with your doctor first like she did.  It can't hurt.  She goes by Shelly on here, and is on my circle of friends if you have any questions and would like to ask her. Thanks.

    Re: Alli and thyroid issues

     Hi Candi,

Add me back. K?  LOL  Guess what we were trying to do didn't work.  LOL

    Hi All,

If you haven't noticed yet, I am AkAngel's mom.  We are doing the Alli program together, but at each owns pace.  Also since I have a thyroid prob, I am doing different things to help me.  The past week or so has been really hard on both of us, but hopefully things will get back on track here soon.

As for taking Alli with thyroid meds, my doc said it's fine, it won't interfere with anything.  Like Ak Angel says, at most, check with you own personal doctor.  Together with the thyroid meds, and the Alli, I have lost almost 30 pounds.  Am working on it.  It's one day at a time.  For all of us.  Oh, and I have an underactive thyroid, hypothyroid, if that helps anyone.  Hope it does.  And Candi....  Add me back on... ROFL.

    Re: Alli and thyroid issues

     Hi Everyone

I am brand new to this program.  I just went to the doctor, ans was wondering about the Lap Band, she put me on Alli, However: she wanted me to take prescription strength (Xenical 120MG), when I asked how much the Co-pay was??  They told me that no Insurance covers this.  It would cost me 330.00 for the monthly Prescription, so I said that there was no way I could afford that.  They told me I coul get it over the counter, for about 60.00  I thought that was still expendsive, but I bought it about a week ago.

However; it is only 1/2 the dosage she wanted me to take.  I have read the information that you are only supposed to take it 3X a day. which is fine, but I can't double the dose to equal 120 mg as the prescription strength can I?  I also wondered if I don't eat fat in my meal am I still supposed to take it with that meal.?

What  Is the correct way to take it, is 3X a day with or without fat??????

Thanks for the Info about Thyroid problems, I am waiting on the results of my blood test, I have a feeling that my Thyroid is low or very low.  I feel tired and I can't seem to lose weight no matter what I do, my skin is itchy (Dry)  There are other symptoms, but I have to wait and see....

Can any of you please tell me some of the Symptoms of Low Thyroids???

I haven't experienced to mny of those side effects that they talk about.. Is that normal??  I only seem to get a somewhat gassy stomach, not to bad though.  Does that mean it isn't working?

I am sorry for all the questions.

If anyone has any answers to my many questions, I would appreciate any help.

    Kimber

PS  how long did it take you to lose 30 LBS???

    Re: Alli and thyroid issues

     Hi Kimber

I would stick to the 3 pills a day with the mulitvitamin.  On the 1800 calorie diet thing.  And drop down over time.

Wow that is alot of money for a co pay.  It effects people differently. My mom, she has hardly any side efect, and me i can stay within my limit and under and i can still get side effects,  but i also told my mom i think it owrks like a detox for me along the way it is supposed to work to so yea.

My mom has under active thyriod and she has lost 35 pounds with this, along with her meds,

some symptoms of under active thyriod porblems are, extreme tiredness, cotten mouth, sleeping to much, lack on periods, hair falling out, ececive sweating, irratablity, wiaght gain, lack of concetration, etc.

If its an over it the oposite.

Like I said before, my mom lost 35 and I lost 31 and that is in 2 and half months time. Alli works. We practicaly gave up on everything else because it never seemed to work. THis is actually the first thing we saw real results with. and are happy  about it. And we are sticking to it.

ps i am ading you to my fav circle and my mom will when she gets on.

    Re: Alli and thyroid issues

     Hi Angel

Thanks for writting me, and giving me some important information.  I am having some of the symptoms you are talking about, IE: tiredness, somewhat of a cotton mouth, I find myself liking to take naps,  I used to not be able to sleep to well at night, but now I find myself getting more tired these days.  I am so sleepy in the mornings, I have to drag myself up at 4:30 AM in the mornings to get my husband's lunch ready, and get him off.  I used to get up at 2:45 Am when I was working, and had somewhat more energy then, I was unemployed in April, and now I also notice that I am gaining weight easy nowdays, even when I exercise.  I haven't been perfect with my eating plan, but I haven't been that bad I don't think.  I think my metabolism has really slowed down, and I have no motivation, I should be going out and trying to find work, but instead I just am content to sit on the computer and go to the job sites and apply there.

I too tried everything under the sun, it works for a couple weeks, but then it doesn't anymore.  Tell me how long you have been on alli, did you say 2 1/2 months for both you and your mom??  How old is your MOM?

I was a little afraid to start, because I read all the negatives, it was a little scary!  But so far I haven't experienced any bad side effects.  Just a little gassy, maybe slightly bloated,.  I was checking out the menus for the upcomming week, they look pretty good and that would be easy to prepare.

I should be getting my test results within a week or so, I will let you and your mom what they find out?

Do you and your Mom workout?  I recently signed up for Powerhouse GYM, I like it, they have Classes and Cardio, Weight machines.

My Hubby just left for his 2 week Military Annual Duty last night.  I am home alone, and I get pretty lonely.  I am getting tired of Computer and TV for entertainment.  So I decided that next week I will start Walking at the Soccer Park and going to the GYM, and trying to get in a DVD a few times this week.  I have to push myself, or I will just not motivate myself.  I do think I feel better when I force myself to go.

What State do you guys live in? I live in Calif.  This weekend it has been extremely "Hot"  Today it was up to 115 degrees.  This weather is the type you just want to stay inside.

I went to the store to get some of the things on the diet.  It is quite a list!  Is every week different?  Can you see what Menus are comming up  IE:  like 2 or 3 weeks ahead?  I tried looking but didn't find any way to check, maybe I didn't look hard enough.  Do you both follow the Alli Menu?

Well Sorry I talked your ear off!!  LOL!!!!

    Have a great night!

    Re: Alli and thyroid issues

    Hi Kimber,

This is Unicornpookie, Angel's mom.  To answer a few questions....  We don't really follow any of the diet "meals" they put on the site.  We have adjusted our day to day eating to keep within the guidelines.  Yes, we have both been on Alli for 2 and 1/2 months.  She has lost 31 pounds, I have lost 35 as of yesterday.  I am 48, with a very underactive thyroid.  I can look at a candy bar and gain thirty pounds  from it.  LOL  Honestly, though, I can.  We stick to diet things, like Crystal lite drinks, and low fat/carb stuff.  My hub is a diabetic so in a way, we were kinda geared up to make the change.  What we can eat on the Alli plan, or as our daily choices without going over the calorie/fat counts, hub can eat too.  And with my getting ready to go back to school, via the government due to my military disability, it's going to be really interesting.  We stick to the protein bars, and stuff like that, but also eat well rounded meals too, just cut the fat and portion sizes.  There really isn't much to have to change what you already eat, unless you are on high carbs/fat, then yeah, you have to.

As for my thyroid, when I was 20, it was almost nill.  The doctor thought I had mono.  Get a load of that one. LOL  Luckily, I remembered being treated for under active thyroid when I was a kid, I had to take plain iodine drops..yuck.  After a week of me up all night drinking water, mom called the doctor, he said take me off it, and that was it.  I was sleeping 14 hours a day, up for half hour, and sleep for another 14.  No problem.  There was even one time I went to bed Monday night and didn't wake up once, not even to go to the bathroom, until Thursday of that week.  I had to call work and say I was sorry for not showing up, but they reminded me I was on vacation. LOL   So yeah, memory loss is also part of the low thyroid.  The doctor did a thyroid test, the T4 as they call it, and a mono check.  It came back it was my thyroid.  (check the page, turn it..lol)  He immediately put me on thyroid meds, told me he didn't know how I was even walking, that I should be in the hospital, on an IV, and in intensive care being monitored.  I was that close to being in a coma.  Yes, not to scare you, but if you have an under active thyroid, you can quite possibly go into a coma and lose your life too.  I checked things out over the net a lot on it, and keep up to date with a lot of medical stuff.  I was six months from having full blown uterine cancer as well.  So yeah, I watch a lot of things that we eat, especially my daughter and I, due to that, but also with cancer being a rampid running issue in my family, we have to be particularly careful.  We just lost my son, her brother, two years ago this Wednesday to colon cancer.  He was just 18.  Two weeks before his 19th birthday.  They found out it was cancer when he was 16, but linked it to his high blood pressure which he had since he was 12.  'Magine that one.  Soooo this week is hard on us, but we will make it.

Don't be afraid to ask me or her about things, and you are not imposing.  Hey, if we can help in any way, that's why we are here, along with helping ourselves too.  K??  I go by UnicornPookie.  My son use to call me his pookie bear, and I love unicorns.  I didn't like the sound of pookie unicorn, so went with unicronpookie.  LOL   Anywho....Will let Angel, (Candi) chat at you.  Nice to meet you and glad to be of help.

    Re: Alli and thyroid issues

     Hi Shelly

Thanks for writting me, I haven't received my blood test results back.  They will probably say it is fine.  I had a thryoid problem when I was a child, but later no-one ever told me that it was low??  I like the menus with a substitution to my particular tastes works good for me.  WOW you have done real well with a underactive thyroid.  You do take Thyroid medication right?  Does it seem to give you mor energy?  It won't be a problem if I need to take any medication with Alli right?  You have actually averaged more than 10 Lbs a month.  I have noticed that it is like moving a ton ro lose any, even with good diet and exercise, could that be related to my thyroid.  You are about my age, and you are doing great!!  Have you had any side effects?  I haven't does that mean my Fat consumption is within range.  I am alowed 19grams with each meal.  That seems like alot of Fat?  If you don't get enough Fat, does that affect the rate of weight you will lose?  I m very sorry to hear about your son, that must be so devastating, I can't even imagine!  It is a very hard time for your family, I understand.  But he is at peace in heaven with our father, No more pain!  May God give you strength and peace.  I am truly sorry, it is so hard to lose a loved one.  I lost both of my parents and it still hurts, there is a void in my heart!  I have a brother but we aren't close, we haven't talked since my mom passed in 2003.  I don't have any other family, except for my Hubby's but all of his family is out of state.  He is somewhat alone too!

Your name is cute that is sweet you are using what your son used to call you in your screen name, he would be proud!!  That is a nice tribute!  Good to meet you too!  I just had my mamogram yesterday!  I don't need Paps anymore.   I had a total Hysterectomy except I still have 1 ovary hanging around inside somewhere LOL!!!

Will let you know when my results come in!

    Have a Wonderful Day!!

    Kimber
