I am a June beginner too... started last Tuesday.... I realized I was obsessing about the scale- so I have hid it in the top of my closet... will only allow myself to check it on my weigh in days!
Cat- I am in NC too... it's been HOT, but I LOVE the summer!
I work on the development team for a non-profit here in the Triangle, and LOVE my job, unfortunatley it has me 1/2 running around like crazy, and 1/2 sitting behind the desk... I also have 4 amazing kids (well- 2 kids, 2 step children)- so getting everything done for them leaves very little time for ME :) I am sure all of us understand that!
My approach to this is to plan out my meals and snacks the evenings before- so the next day I am prepared, and not making choices on the fly (which always makes me make horrible decisions!). I write the meals out, the calories, and the fat grams, as well as times I will try to eat, and then package them all up in my cooler. I have never counted calories before and now really realize that was a major problem for me- I really have to think to stay under 1600. (I went over by 57 calories yesterday), But I struggle to meet the fat gram marks.
For exercise- I (like someone else on this thread, but I can't remember who...) have committed to different running bench marks- a 5k in the fall, a 10k next summer- and the big one- the Disney 1/2 marathon in January 2011... I know know KNOW I can do this! For a great plan on a realistic training program for a 5k- check out http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml I LOVE it, and feel so immensly proud of myself when I finish a training! I also garden, take long walks, ride bikes with my kids, and play in the pool with my kids.
My mantra this time is "Be the success story..." I am always inspired by articles, stories, posts, etc by people who have made a healthy life style change, and I am determined to write that story about myself- about going from putting myself last, and running a minute left me out of breath, to finishing a half marathon and feeling GREAT!- (It really helps during the hot runs :))
