Re: Just bought my alli today..doing WW and exercise...

I am happy to see how many of you are doing WW/exercise/Alli combined, I am too :)

I joined WW (again!) last September and started at 315, I stopped going around the holidays but have been able to maintain 284 since then. I am still doing the points, and I go to Curves 3 x a week and walk 4-5 times a week. I am really excited to get an additional boost since I am getting married at the end of September and want to do everything I can do feel like the gorgeous blushing bride :)

Good luck to everyone and hope to hear more from you soon, when I weigh in on Sunday I will let everyone know how I did :)

Re: Just bought my alli today..doing WW and exercise...

I'm sorry.  I'm  not sure where I am supposed to post a question, but since these are questions about just starting Alli, here is one I should have asked a while ago:  The directions say to "take with the meal."  Does that mean before eating, while eating?  Can you take it after?  If before, how long before?  If after, how long after?  That's been on my mind for a while.  Thanks.

Re: Just bought my alli today..doing WW and exercise...

     Hi cherikim,

Don't feel like you are cheating if you are using Alli with WW.  Consider Alli as a plateau breaker and as an additional portion control monitor or point counter.

Orlistat, the active ingredient in Alli, work by inhibiting the enzyme lipase and thereby blocking the absorption of fat (a 60mg capsule blocks about 25% of the fat).  It also makes you more aware of the fat you are eating especially the hidden fat.  Our bodies do need a minimal amount of fat a day to function properly and you do not want to go too low.  It is a matter of balancing your source of calories between fat, carbohydrate and proteins.

Including fresh food rather than processed is also encouraged.  You will be getting more nutrients and energy plus fiber if you eat and snack on fruits and veggies.

Exercise is key to successful weightloss and maintainance.  It is great what you are doing now, but as you continue with the program you will need to change it to challenge your body.  Adding some resistance training builds up muscle which will burn off more calories when you are doing your aerobics.

    Hope this helps,

    Sophia De Monte RPh

    Question

Is there a proper time to take the Alli pill? Meaning, before the meal, during or after? Which will I get the best results, or is there a difference?

    Re: Question

I wondered that too. I started some days ago if I forget when eating, taking it when I think of it, which is never more than a 1/2 hour after eating. It seems to work just fine. I am about 6 weeks into taking Alli and it is still a new habit! Yet I've lost 9 1/2 lbs as of today.

I read somewhere, and at my age, Im just glad to be able to rememeber the context, so I dont know when I read it, (age 42...uggggg)..but it said you can take it 1 hr before or with (and Im assuming with means while you eat the food) or up to 1 hr after wards. I havent received a comment from anyone as to when the "technical" taking time is yet. I forgot on dinner last night, totally forgot. Ever have the "ah-ha" moment.."AH -HA I forgot the pill!"  But I had a pork chop, boneless, loin, I dipped it in shake and bake and baked it. Then a baked potato with fake butter (sounds yummy huh...) fresh green beans, and brocolli. Then for dessert later on....Edy's fat free/sugar free vanilla chocolate swirl...It is awesome!..And only 1 pt on Weight Watchers. The cone if free, and the ice cream is 1 pt for 1/2 cup. Im totally satisfied with it. I worked out about 50 minutes at the YMCA last night. and today I rode my bike to work which is 35 minutes one way, so I will get to ride back too. Then have to walk around town selling high school football coupon books for the son. YUK..at 99 degrees....Doesnt sweat weigh something too????..LOL

What have you been eating to loose the 9.5 lbs? I like to read examples...Cause Im worried about this Saturdays weigh in, I dont feel like I have done anything, mentally. Especially since I stayed the same the week prior. It may get ugly at the meeting..LOL...

    Re: Cheri

Thanks for the info on when to take Alli. It all sounds about right to my thinking, in the ball park is good enough! Sounds like you are doing great with your plan. I am doing a combination Weight Watchers, Eating Well Diet (eatingwell.com) and the Alli plan. I have been stuck in a sedentary mode for a few years, trying to make myself active and not succeeding. I have an office job then come home and sit in front of the computer! Things came together and am active some way every single day. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but I actively work to get it in. When I've been in the groove before, I never lost almost 10 pounds in just 6 weeks so I think the Alli is definitely contributing both with focus/motivaton and actual weight loss.

What I eat would take up too much space but let me try: breakfast is usually about 5 points like oatmeal, raisins and fat free milk; frozen whole wheat waffles with low cal yogurt (ligh n fit vanilla is good) with berries or maybe  english muffin, tomatoe and cheese all toasted and melted up nice. Snacks are 3 point meal bars, cottage cheese with light fruit cocktail/pears/peaches or a fresh plum or something, Haines honey rice cakes or celery with light cream cheese spread on. I always have baby carrots on hand for snacking. I cook a lot so my lunches are generally leftovers and are things like broiled chicken, quinoa and a veggie, grilled pork chops marinated in italian dressing with a potato (red potatoes work better for making a smaller portion) and a green veggie. I add another veggie or salad for dinner. I also like stir fries with any protein. I eat tofu most weeks. They are easy to whip up. or noodle soups which are broth, protein and veggies with some ginger and soy sauce and hot pepper thrown in. Dinner is around  7 points. I really try to get in the minimum 5 fruits and veggies. And various grains like couscous and bulghur which are both fast cooking. Add hot water and let sit! I like to vary my rice by adding a bit of orange or lemon juice when I have that for my starch. I have a lot of Weight Watcher cook books so I don't have to figure out the points for what I cook. And for the busy busy days, I love a WW pizza (8 points) and a salad (1 or 2 points) or one of the 5-6 point meals at lunch with a veggie. I try to keep it under 30 and down towards 24 points. The 18 point target is just too low for my poor hungry tummy. Which is another reason why the exercise is so important! And plenty of water too. I get at least 8 glasses of water in during the day.

At my last check in I was the same weight, but now I'm down a bit more. It really has to be a general trend as far as the number on the scale because I can't predict what day it will read more, less or stay the same. This is for the rest of my life and at 48 years old, I understand things take time. It's a lifetime thing I'm working on here.

I hope some of my meals and snacks sound good. The ones you said sure did! (and lol on the sweat comment)

Re: Just bought my alli today..doing WW and exercise...

I started Monday instead of waiting 'til Tuesday.  I got my shipment Monday and have been doing low-fat for some time so I figured it was safe to start.

I did have to adjust WHEN I eat how-much fat though; on WW I have been eating a light breakfast and lunch, kinda saving up for dinner (my husband is an excellent cook but not so good at low fat...) and that won't work so much with Alli.  I'm thinking it's probably better for me anyway to eat a more balanced amount all through the day anyway, so I have been making it more like 7 point breakfast & lunch, then 12 for dinner, leaving a couple points for snacks (I don't know what I'd do without SF jello and FF whipped topping, lol!!)

    So......... we'll see :)

And I know what you mean - it's kinda hard to get excited about staying even... I know it's better than gaining, but hard to swallow after trying so hard.  I have been stuck at 19 lb .. grr!  Hopefully you'll get your little charm next time - nothing like jewelry ;) ...I LOVE charms!

Yeah, I've been working on learning to pay more attention to the fat grams in addition to points.

Re: Just bought my alli today..doing WW and exercise...

Thanks for your reply. Actually, I did some reps with 3 lb. weights yesterday. I'm managing 4-5 servings of fruit and veggies most every day now. When I'm at 5 every day, then I will work to add even more. I'm also working to eat a wider variety of grains (whole instead of couscous, quinoa instead of white rice...) and get back to all the legumes I used to have on a regular basis. It really helps that I have a concern with treatment effects. I ended up in a situation without much control over my meal but took Alli anyway. I opened a bag of chips and then read the fat content then read the bag had 15 grams so I only ate a few as suddenly the sandwich seemed like plenty all by itself. It's true what you say about Alli making me more aware of the fat and I'm learning to check for it more closely. I've noticed that I'm not overwhelmed by hunger and wonder if the Alli somehow helps with that by keeping fat in the system a big longer, helping with satiation.

Cheri ~ Nevada     PS I finished those chips another time, and really enjoyed them as a special treat.

    Re: Question

     Hi Karla,

An alli dose can be taken upto 1 hour before, during, and upto 1 hour after a meal and still be effective.  It is recommended to be taken with a meal as a reminder to take the dose and as a motivator to stay within your recommended caloric and fat guidelines.

    Hope this helps.

     Hi Cheri,

Alli can be taken upto 1 hour before, during ,or upto 1 hour after a meal and be effective.   It is suggested to be taken with a meal as a reminder to take the dose and as a motivator to stay within your caloric and fat gram limits.  Taking the dose 30 minutes after you have eaten is fine, and you are seeing the results!

    Keep up the great work!
