Bee, we walked in a huge treed area called Minto Brown Park in Salem, Oregon. The park has miles of trails that wind along the Willamette River and along the edge of farmland. It's a really beautiful area. We love Oregon! My husband and I were both born in Washington state, but have lived in Oregon most of our lives. He is 15 years my senior and retired, so it's easy for him to find the time to walk. I am a teacher with 6-8 years until retirement. I go back to work August 26th, so I'd better take my pedometer to school if I'm going to keep up with this challenge!

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

Hi folks...and thanks for the kind words.

No, I have never done a marathon. I'm a long ways from that. But, I've been inspired and i have been trying to do one hour on the treadmill in the morning and another hour at night...but I don't always make it. yesterday I did 20 minutes in the morning and 40 at night.  I also have a full DVR...so, trying to watch as much of the Olympics (recorded) as possible while I'm on the treadmill to make room for the next day's recordings.  lol

So, I have another 2.1 miles to add from last night and another 3.09 from this morning for a total of 19.6 miles.

By the way, I started my new lifestyle about 6 weeks ago and have gone from 243 to 225 today....so, the extra effort IS paying off.

    Good luck with the challenge.

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

Good morning everyone.  Here's the daily medal update.

    As of 5:45 am ET 8/14, msn.com reports : 10 gold, 9 silver and 14 bronze. YAY!

That makes our TOTALCHALLENGE MILES TO DATE:  18 MILES

I was able to do 2 extra miles last night, so my personal challenge miles so far stands at 12 1/4.

This challenged has pushed me to go significantly further than my usual walks.  My legs are little sore today, but that may partially be due to strength training.  I don't lift much weight yet, but I'm trying.

Your setting in Oregon souds stunning, Susan.  We like walking in your nearby park, but it isn't as large as yours.  Lisa, seem to be putting in lots of miles with great enthusiasm--what's your total so far?  Ed, you've put together quite a program for yourself in 6 weeks; you've certainly earned those results.

Everyone keep putting in the miles, 'cause the athletes are working hard over in Beijing.

    Bee

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

Hi again, boy, I'm beginning to think that our athletes are out to get us (LOL).  Phelps is unbelievable! I am hoping that I will be able to keep going like this after I go back to work on August 26th. Here are my current totals (but they are a long way from 18 miles!!!):

    08/09/08 - 2 miles

    08/10/08 - 2.5 miles

    08/11/08 - 2.0 miles

    08/12/08 - 2.5 miles

    08/13/08 - 2.0 miles

    08/14/08 - 2.5 miles

    TOTAL - 13.5 miles!

Keep up the great job everyone!!! I'm going to try to walk on the treadmill again tonight. It's supposed to be a "hot" one in Salem, Oregon today (of course, "hot," is relative, since I don't live in the South or Southwest)!

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

Good morning all.  Lisa is right; the US really is smokin' hot.  What an amazing time in Beijing.  We all are going to have to keep cranking to keep up.

As of 6:10 am ET 8/15, The medal count per msn.com is 14 Gold, 12 Silver and 18 Bronze.  Wow.

TOTAL CHALLENGE MILES TO DATE: 24 1/2 MILES.  Wow again.  Quite a jump from yesterday.

Bee's personal miles:  I did an extra 2 1/2 last night and 3 this am, so I'm at 16 3/4 so far.

Keep moving everyone, because there are more medals to come.  Imagine how good Labor Day will feel this year.

Re: Go for the Gold--Olympic Challenge

I just saw this thread and wondered if its too late to join? I'm positive I can catch up! I walk everyday.  Starting w/ today, I walked 2 miles (22 1/4 more to go at the moment?). I'll try to push myself a little harder to go some extra miles this week.

Bee, here are my new totals (I "pooped" out and didn't get on the treadmill last night). My husband and I just got back from a 2 mile walk in Bush's Pasture Park. It's a lovely park surrounding the Willamette University's playing fields and a Soap Box Derby track. We went about 9 this morning, as it's supposed to hit 104 in Salem today! Maybe I'll get on the treadmill tonight... we'll see.

Here are my current totals: (they are still a long way from 24.5 miles, but slow and steady wins the race!!!)

    08/09/08 - 2 miles

    08/10/08 - 2.5 miles

    08/11/08 - 2.0 miles

    08/12/08 - 2.5 miles

    08/13/08 - 2.0 miles

    08/14/08 - 2.5 miles

    08/15/08 - 2.0 miles

    TOTAL - 15.5 miles!
